Giannis Antetokounmpo: ‘I want Luka to Lakers, I want Nikola Jokic to Knicks, I want all the Europeans to go to all the big markets’

February 3, 2025 by Hoops Hype

Later on, Giannis Antetokounmpo proposed a dream of his, talking about big European players in big market teams, even naming some examples: “Okay, let’s say something funny because I took it and spoke about it very, very serious. Now that a European will be, I believe, the face of the Los Angeles Lakers, this is something new from Europe that never happened before,” Giannis started. “We had Pau Gasol, obviously he was a great player. And Sasha Vujacic, great guy, one of my close friends, but I mess up his name all the time. Now, I just love it.” “You know what I want? I want Luka to the Lakers, I want Nikola Jokic to the New York Knicks, I want all the Europeans to go to all the big markets to see something incredible,” Giannis said.

Giannis Antetokounmpo reacted to Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers: “I thought it was fake news. It’s insane. Nobody’s safe.” 🗣
He also made a bold statement about European players in the biggest markets, wanting “Jokic to the Knicks”:

After tonight’s game, Giannis Antetokounmpo was asked for his thoughts on Luka Dončić getting traded by the Dallas Mavericks.

Heading to the fourth quarter, the Bucks lead, 99-93, after AJ Green hit a 35 footer just before the third quarter buzzer sounded.
Green is up to 14 points on night.

That’s just a hilariously sloppy play, but the Bucks made it work. Overthrow from Middleton to Jackson. Jackson save to Prince. Prince save to Middleton. Middleton through traffic to Antetokounmpo.
Bucks up, 83-73, with 5:38 left in the third quarter. – 10:11 PM
Frank Madden @fmaddenNBA
Giannis missing free throws is bad, but the funny part is that the Bucks are weirdly good at rebounding his misses. So he’s 0/4 tonight…and yet they have 6 points off two triples on the two possessions where he went to the foul line. – 10:01 PM
Eric Nehm @eric_nehm
Rough night for Giannis Antetokounmpo at the line, but the second of those two misses rolled all the way out to Taurean Prince and the Bucks have a 69-61 lead with 10:27 left in the third quarter.
This is the Bucks’ biggest lead of the night. – 9:58 PM

Who’s the second-best player the Lakers could have traded the Davis-Christie-1st package for this season?
Automatic no’s, imo, on: Jokic, SGA, Giannis, Wemby, Tatum, Mitchell, Mobley, Brunson, Edwards and Curry.
Maybe Devin Booker? And that’s a big maybe? – 2:17 PM
Frank Isola @TheFrankIsola
If you’re trading a player as talented and accomplished as Luka wouldn’t you first call Boston and ask about their best players? Wouldn’t you offer him to Milwaukee for Giannis or any other team with young star(s) and multiple picks?
Instead they target the Lakers and Anthony – 12:22 PM
Jorge Sierra @hoopshype
Possibly not the biggest news of the night, but DeMar DeRozan passed Ray Allen in scoring for No. 28 in NBA history.
Also: Devin Booker moved ahead of Sam Cassell (No. 136) and Nikola Jokic did the same with Sam Jones and Kevin Love (No. 145). – 5:43 AM

It wasn’t perfect, but the Denver Nuggets ended their losing streak with a clutch win vs Philly.
Jokic, Murray, and MPJ COOKED offensively. The defense needs to improve, but the offense is as elite as ever.

Something I wanna mention before it gets lost.
Murray had it going all night. Could have kept shooting down the stretch.
Instead, he got off the ball, took zero shots in the clutch, set up Joker and MPJ, played good defense.
Wanna make sure he gets credit for being a teammate. – 10:23 PM

Denver escapes with a wild win behind 28-9-13 from Nikola Jokic, who scored or assisted on 13 straight points in the crunch time to pull out the win.
Massive game from Tyrese Maxey, who had 42 & 9, in the loss to snap Philly’s 4 game win streak. – 10:04 PM

Nikola Jokic scored 8 points in the final minute and the Nuggets will escape with a 137-134 win over the Sixers.

Will be interesting to see if the Sixers close with Ricky Council IV or Justin Edwards. Nuggets have Jokic defending Council right now, Edwards being a more reliable spot-up shooter could make him a better option against that. – 9:46 PM
Adam Aaronson @SixersAdam
After three: Sixers 100, Nuggets 103.
Ricky Council IV beats the buzzer for the millionth time this season, knocking down a corner three over Jokic.
Maxey scored 16 points in the third.
This game continues to be awesome, even with a bit more defense being played in the third. – 9:28 PM
Austin Krell @NBAKrell
Outstanding effort from the Sixers in this first half. They don’t have much of an answer for Jokic (no one does), but they’re making him attempt to guard on defense and he has no interest. Lot of two-man game for Yabu pick-and-pop and then attack the closeout and swing the ball. – 8:34 PM
Vinny Benedetto @VBenedetto
Nuggets up 38-36 after one. Jamal Murray leads Denver with 10 points. Nikola Jokic adds 9-6-6. Christian Braun has 8 quick points off the bench.

Julian Strawther hits a baseline J at the buzzer to give Denver a 38-36 lead after 1.
– Maxey leads both teams with 13/4 on 5-10 shooting.

More on this storyline

Milwuakee Bucks’ leader had a few thoughts about the trade, as he was sure that it was fake news at first: “I thought it was fake news. It’s insane. Obviously, I’ve played against Luka a lot of times and AD and all the people that were included in the trade. This is the world we’re living in,” Giannis started. “It’s a business, you have to understand nobody’s safe, nobody’s safe. If a five-time All-NBA first-team, a 25-year-old, a guy that just made it to the Finals seven months ago, a guy that led the league in scoring, a guy that finished second or third in MVP voting…” “A guy that scored 70-something points one time, a guy that had a 60-point triple-double, a guy that knows how to play the game of basketball, I can keep going and going.” -via BasketNews / February 3, 2025
Eric Nehm: Per Bucks, these guys are all probable tonight: G. Antetokounmpo (right patella tendinopathy) D. Lillard (left groin soreness) B. Lopez (back soreness) K. Middleton (bilateral ankle injury management) T. Prince (right patella tendinopathy) G. Trent Jr. (left hip flexor soreness) -via x.com / February 2, 2025
Mike Finger: Asked Chris if he would take Giannis upon his offer: “Yeah, I don’t know if he wants to go have a glass of wine. Everybody wanna be fighters.” -via Bluesky / February 2, 2025
Jorge Sierra: Possibly not the biggest news of the night, but DeMar DeRozan passed Ray Allen in scoring for No. 28 in NBA history. Also: Devin Booker moved ahead of Sam Cassell (No. 136) and Nikola Jokic did the same with Sam Jones and Kevin Love (No. 145). -via Bluesky / February 2, 2025
Keerthika Uthayakumar: Most triple-doubles this season: Nikola Jokic – 22 Nikola Jokic through 3 quarters – 15 LeBron James – 9 Domantas Sabonis – 8 Jokic has more triple-doubles through three quarters than any other player has in an entire game. -via Bluesky / February 2, 2025
Jokić was 19 years old and two months removed from being drafted in the second round by the Denver Nuggets. He had come to P3 to undergo an advanced athlete assessment. When he attempted a vertical leap, he jumped 17 inches. It was, according to Elliott, the worst vertical jump they had ever recorded. In the last decade, as Jokić grew into an NBA MVP and one of the best basketball players in the world, the story of his trip to P3 and his 17-inch jump has become a part of his lore. In many ways, it’s actually the least interesting part of the story. -via New York Times / February 2, 2025
