Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson has yet to play this season having suffered a bad knee injury. It was close to 300 days before Watson made his return to training and there is plenty of belief in the Packers camp that he will be available for selection in a few weeks’ time. Should the Packers want Watson on the roster this season, they have three weeks to activate or place him on the injured reserve list.
Reasons for the Packers to Activate Watson
One of the main reasons for the Packers to activate Watson is the injury to Jayden Reed. In 2024, Reed was the only player in the NFL with 150-plus rushing yards and 800-plus receiving yards, so the stats alone show his importance to the team. However, in the second week of the 2025 season, Reed was removed from the game against Washington Commanders with a shoulder injury that was later confirmed as a fractured collarbone. It has been reported Reed could miss up to 10 weeks of the season. The return of Watson to the Packers team would be a much-needed boost in terms of replacing Reed.
So, the return of Watson would benefit the Packers offense in terms of increasing the number of experienced wide receivers and to both compliments, plus take some pressure off the shoulders of Matthew Golden. Another reason why the Packers will be pleased to activate Watson is the form of first-round pick Matthew Golden. It is fair to say the Packers have yet to get the best out of Golden, who was the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Having made a slow start to the season, Golden has grown into the Packers’ offense having been targeted only twice in each of the first two games of the season. The statistics improved against both Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys, but the return of Watson would be a massive boost as the Packers cannot continue to rely on Golden.
What to Expect from Watson on His Return
If we travel back to week 10 of the 2023 season, we can measure the impact of Watson in the Packers team. With Watson in the team, the Packers averaged 28.8 points in 19 games but in the 13 games he has missed, the average points have dropped to 23.8. That is a big difference, and the Packers will be hoping his return to the team will see the average points grow.
Watson is known for his thrilling combination of size and speed. He is different in that respect to Golden and Watson’s presence on the field is sure to demand the attention of opposition defence. Watson is likely to be used as a deep threat and can break through tackles rather than having to rely on agility. With opposition defences focusing on the runs of Watson, it can leave openings for Romeo Doubs and Tucker Kraft running short routes.
The 40 points scored against Dallas was a boost in terms of the offensive efforts in the Packers team. However, the 10 points scored in the previous game against Cleveland is still fresh in the memory. As things stand, the Packers are 9th in the NFL for points per game and 14th for net yards per game. The Packers are putting a lot of faith in Watson to elevate the offense to become one of the best in the NFL this season.
There is no doubt the return of Watson will be a huge boost to the Packers offense. The absence of Reed means now is the perfect time to welcome Watson back into the fold and the stats show with Watson in the team, the Packers offense is much stronger.
