Why the Packers need Luke Musgrave to stay healthy

May 27, 2025 by Packers Talk

Last year I wrote how the Packers could really use Luke Musgrave in the offense.

With Tucker Kraft, the two tight ends would make a lethal combination, especially in the passing game.

Instead though Musgrave battled injuries throughout the 2024 season.

An ankle injury during the Packers loss to the Minnesota Vikings, required surgery.

Musgrave only played in 7 games during the 2025 season.

This the latest in a string of injuries for Musgrave.

He was off to a great start his rookie year before a lacerated kidney against the Chargers, caused him to miss several games.

As the 2025 season is in a couple of months, the question is can Luke Musgrave stay healthy.

And if so how will the offense look with both Musgrave and Kraft on the field?

Why the need for two tight ends?

The Packers need a healthy Luke Musgrave in 2025.

Why?

Because this give Jordan Love yet another weapon to use in the passing game.

While the talk about the offense has been around the wide receivers, the tight ends have a part in the passing game as well.

If Musgrave can be productive in the passing game and be a vertical threat, the passing game will be more than dangerous.

Musgrave is capable of putting up those numbers.

Before an ACL injury ended his senior season Musgrave was putting up numbers in the passing game.

In 2021 he set career highs with 22 receptions for 304 yards.

He also had a touchdown that season as well.

Can Musgrave be an impact player

While Musgrave was out, fellow tight end Tucker Kraft surpassed him as the number one tight end on the depth chart.

Kraft was able to put together an incredible 2024 season.

He had 50 receptions for 707 yards and 7 touchdowns, all career highs for Kraft.

Those numbers are numbers that the Packers were looking for when that draft Musgrave.

But the question is wether or not Musgrave can be an impact player on the Packers offense with Kraft.

Even when healthy, Musgrave didn’t get too much playing time in 2024.

During the first four games, Kraft played 227 snaps to Musgrave’s 108.

But the Packers will give Musgrave every chance during the preseason and training camp to get involved in the offense.

Keep in mind that the Packers spent a second round draft pick on him back in 2023.

Obviously the Packers think very highly of Musgrave.

Conclusion

Having Luke Musgrave involved in the Packers offense is important.

For Musgrave, he must stay healthy and stay on the field when called on.

If Musgrave can stay on the field and return to the form he was at during his rookie season, the Packers then have two formable tight ends.

This creates a good problem for Jordan Love as he will then have more passing weapons in the offense.
