Before we get started with this it’s important to acknowledge something. Nobody knows anything. Not the media, not the coaches, not the players, when it comes to finding meaning in early minicamps. The Packers are no different. Players that showed out this last week may not even make the team, players that looked bad might have breakout seasons. That being said, it’s still fun to talk about, so lets get into the biggest things I saw as we enter the NFL’s quiet season.
The Packers Social Media Team
For too long fans have had to rely on beat writers describing the cool things they saw at camp. Anyone recording and distributing highlights was removed from the field. No longer.
Would he have been sacked in a real game? Maybe. Does it mean anything without pads? Probably not. Do I care one bit? Not a chance. This was an insane throw, that’s my quarterback, MVP season coming.
Matthew Golden Looks The Part
The Packers wide receivers were a problem last year. No team had a worse drop rate than the Packers. On third down Jordan Love lost over 28 EPA due to receiver mistakes, the most anyone has lost in the last 4 years. The Packers obviously recognized this and decided to try and fix the problem. They drafted two wide receivers with their first three picks, and their top overall pick wasted no time showing he belonged.
Rookie wideouts coming in and making a difference has become more common than in years past. If Golden can come and be that guy, and the drops come back to average, Green Bay could be fielding a top five offense in 2025.
The Packers Offensive Line
A lot of people would argue that the secondary is Green Bays most unsettled position group. While that is certainly valid given the departure of Jaire Alexander, the offensive line has some real questions as well. I believe that the Packers have no interest in paying Rasheed Walker. Walker has been fine, but not special, and Green Bay is going to give Jordan Morgan every chance to take that job. We saw it already in camp, with Walker out Morgan was given a vast majority of the snaps at LT.
To the larger point though, really only one spot seems settled/drama free, and that’s Aaron Banks at LG. We discussed the LT situation. Elgton Jenkins will be the center but there is a contract dispute, RG could be dependent on how the LT situation plays out. Zach Tom is obviously entrenched at RT, but is also needing to be paid.
I have complete faith in the coaching staff to get this figured out, but it’s probably more unsettled than the team would like at this stage.
Bo Melton and the Very Crowded WR Room
The Packers have a lot of wide receivers right now. So much in fact that the team is looking at potentially switching Bo Melton to CB. Having this news come out in the wake of Alexanders release was not great timing, but you can understand why they’d try it. Melton has the athletic traits to do it, there is a need on the roster, and with the new additions making the team as a WR may not be possible. New draft picks aside Melton would also need to look out for future gold jacket player Cornelius Johnson*
*Cornelius Johnson will probably not make the team.
So what should we take from all of this? Nothing. Except that its fun to watch your team regardless of the context. Also, if any of these predictions come true you can go back and say I told you so to friends, family, fans of other teams, fans of your team, and random strangers on the internet.
