The Packers invested in their offense this offseason. Will it make a difference?
The Packers clearly saw an issue with their playmakers last year. Josh Jacobs needed help from the offensive line, so they signed Aaron Banks and drafted Anthony Belton. Jordan Love needed help from his receivers, so they drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams and signed Mecole Hardman just to add in a bit of redundancy.
Will their makeover work? It’s hard to say, and it’s understandable that there might be a little bit of uncertainty about the Packers “skill position” players heading into this season. A lot is resting on a pair of rookie receivers and a wide receiver room that was largely inconsistent last season, to say nothing of how the offensive line re-vamp will work out or how the running back depth beyond Josh Jacobs will perform this season.
But it’s encouraging to see the Packers at least try to improve these areas. In the past there have been many opportunities to criticize the Packers for seeing an obvious issue with the team and just…not doing anything about it. (Ongoing issues with the defensive line come to mind.) But this is not that. This is the Packers taking decisive action to try to get better in an area where they were weak last year. Whether or not it pays off remains to be seen, but they’re at least taking steps.
