The Full Details Of Sammy Watkins’ Contract Are Out

April 20, 2022 by The Spun

Sammy Watkins celebrates at Super Bowl LIV.

The Green Bay Packers took a step toward replenishing their wide receiver room by signing Sammy Watkins to a one-year deal on Thursday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter initially said the contract was worth up to $4 million, but the 28-year-old may not earn as much with his new club.

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky broke down the contract details Tuesday morning. With $1.85 million total earnings and unconfirmed incentives, the reporter said Watkins is “no lock to make the Packers’ roster.”

Sammy Watkins’ contract indicates he’s no lock to make the Packers’ roster.

Signing bonus: $350,000.
Base: $1.12 million
Roster bonus: $19,441/game active.
Workout bonus: $50,000
Total: $1.85M

Reportedly had incentives up to $4 million but no details on those yet.

Ari Meirov of Pro Football Focus said Watkins could reach the initially reported $4 million by earning up to $525,000 for playing time, receptions, and receiving yards incentives. He can receive another $575,000 by scoring an unspecified number of touchdowns.

Contract terms: The #Packers signed WR Sammy Watkins to a 1-year, $1.85M deal with $350K coming in a signing bonus.

He has $2.15M available in incentives for playing time ($525K max), receptions ($525K max), receiving yards ($525K max) and receiving TDs ($575K max).

So $4M max.

Once a budding superstar who compelled the Buffalo Bills to trade up and select him with the No. 4 pick in 2014, Watkins’ stock is trending backward. After scoring eight touchdowns in his single 2017 season with the Los Angeles Rams, he tallied as many touchdowns in his following three years combined for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Last season, the former Clemson star only mustered 27 catches for 394 receiving yards and one touchdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

At this stage in his career, Watkins is certainly not a suitable replacement for Davante Adams. If anything, the Packers may hope he fills the shoes of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a vertical threat who signed with Kansas City to help fill the void left behind by Tyreek Hill.

However, Watkins gets another shot to unleash his untapped upside alongside an MVP quarterback. With Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Amari Rodgers currently comprising Green Bay’s top wide receivers, the door is wide open to earn a substantial target share from Aaron Rodgers.
