For all the discussions of where Aaron Rodgers wants to play this year, it might be time to wonder just how a new team would acquire him.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler detailed the complexities attached to trading for the Green Bay Packers quarterback.
“One source stressed to ESPN that the Packers would want so much in compensation — top draft picks and key young players — that a trade could be difficult for the team acquiring Rodgers to execute,” Fowler wrote.
According to Fowler, the Packers offered Rodgers “a significant long-term contract” that would pay the 38-year-old into his 40s. The four-time MVP is currently under contract for one more year at a $46.1 million cap hit, so any extension should ease Green Bay’s cap burden while keeping Rodgers well-compensated beyond 2022.
The Packers are awaiting Rodgers’ decision before exploring trade talks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, but Fowler said the Denver Broncos are “willing to compete to acquire him either through a new contract or draft-pick compensation.” The Pittsburgh Steelers have also reportedly checked in on his status.
There’s speculation that Rodgers will make his decision Tuesday, the deadline for teams to exercise the franchise tag. Per Fowler, the Packers will “almost certainly” tag star wide receiver Davante Adams if they don’t strike a deal by the 4 p.m. ET deadline.
If he decides to leave Lambeau Field, there are still plenty of hurdles to overcome before Rodgers can play elsewhere.
