Report: Packers begin contract extension talks with CB Jaire Alexander

March 4, 2022 by Packers Wire

Reps for Jaire Alexander met with the Packers yesterday to talk extension per an honest to goodness source. Nothing imminent, but decent chance something gets done prior to the start of free agency.

The Green Bay Packers are entering the negotiation stage of extensions talks with cornerback Jaire Alexander, according to Aaron Nagler of CheeseheadTV.com.

Alexander, an All-Pro in 2020 before missing all but four games to injury in 2021, is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2022.

Nagler reports there’s a “decent chance” of an extension getting done before the start of the new league year on March 16, which could provide the Packers with important salary cap relief.

Alexander’s fifth-year option will count $13,294,000 against the cap in 2022 unless an extension can be worked out. Even with a significant signing bonus, the Packers could lower his cap number by a few million in 2022 with a long-term extension.

Despite last season’s injury, Alexander is one of the best young cornerbacks in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl in 2020 and is still only 25 years old, providing the Packers with ample incentive for keeping him under contract in Green Bay past 2022.

In 48 career games, Alexander has 44 pass breakups and five interceptions. According to Pro Football Focus, opposing quarterbacks have an overall passer rating of 84.7 when targeting Alexander over his career.

An extension for Alexander would be expected before the start of the regular season. For instance, in 2020, the Packers and Kenny Clark completed a four-year extension during the training camp before his fifth season in the NFL.
