The Green Bay Packers will go with an internal promotion to replace departing linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, who left Green Bay to become the new defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, the Packers are expecting to promote defensive assistant Sean Duggan — a long-time coaching teammate of Jeff Hafley — to linebackers coach.
Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported last week that Duggan was the leading candidate to replace Campanile if he left the Packers.
Duggan came with Hafley from Boston College to Green Bay in 2024. He was previously a linebackers coach (2020-23) and co-defensive coordinator (2023) under Hafley at Boston College before joining the Packers as an assistant last season.
Duggan was also previously a linebackers coach at Hawaii (2016-17) and UMass (2018). Duggan and Hafley also worked together at Ohio State for one season in 2019.
Duggan played four seasons and appeared in 45 games at linebacker for Boston College. He was a team captain in 2014.
In 2025, Duggan will be tasked with continuing the development of ascending linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, 2022 first-round pick Quay Walker and 2024 third-round pick Ty’Ron Hopper. Isaiah McDuffie and Eric Wilson are free agents, so the Packers could have some turnover at linebacker next season.
In addition to linebackers coach, Campanile was also the run game coordinator in 2024, and it’s currently unclear who will take over that role under Hafley in 2025. Duggan and incoming defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington are options.
