Packers Shocking New Gamble: Hurt Stars Returning Too Early

November 21, 2025 by Packers Talk

The Green Bay Packers have typically been known to be overly cautious with injured players. They have favored long-term health over short-term gains. This is why the Packers’ injury report typically looks like an overworked excel spreadsheet.

This week’s report has 33% of their starters appearing, not counting those on IR or PUP. Some of the names on it are certainly concerning.

Obviously there are a lot of factors to the number of injuries. Eespecially given that we are 12 weeks into a season where they had a very early BYE. The shocking part seems to be how quickly some folks have been on the field the past 2 seasons in general.

Packers Early Returns

Packers QB Jordan Love

Over the last two seasons, the approach seems to be different. Stars have been brought back earlier than many fans and analysts expected.

Look no further than QB1 Jordan Love. In 2024, he returned just two games after suffering an MCL sprain, even though medical experts had projected a longer recovery.

While he was cleared without being put on injured reserve, Love later admitted he was still “dealing with issues” in his knee upon his return. Even more puzzling was why he was rushed back so early in the season with Malik Willis in full control at the helm. It limited his mobility and in my opinion, likely cost them a deep playoff run.

Packers WR Christian Watson

Christian Watson, a key deep-threat receiver was reportedly playing on a prior knee injury before ultimately tearing his ACL in the 2024 season finale. I have been very vocal about frustrations with Christian’s inabililty to stay on the field. However, I cannot deny that he was being put out on the field when the risk clearly outweighed the reward.

Packers K Brandon McManus

The Packers brought in Brandon McManus last season to settle the woes of their Special Teams room. I wrote an article last year about his signing that you can check out below:

Brandon McManus: The Packers New Controversial Kicker

Back around Week 6 of the 2025 season McManus had a reported MCL injury which prompted the signing of substitute teaher, Lucas Havrisik. Who, no big deal, came in and set a franchise record.

The #Packers signed K Lucas Havrisik last week … he was actually prepared to be a substitute teacher before Green Bay called.

Yet again, despite there being an obvious hot handed (I guess footed in this scenario) back up that could hold down the fort during Brandon’s rehab, they had MacManus return to his kicking duties.

McManus coming out onto the field and kicking injured cost crucially needed points to be left off the board. He clearly needed more time to recover and there was no reason to rush this given Lucas’ performance.

Packers Looking Ahead

Nobody ever wants to see that blue tent come up on the sidelines, but it just seems to be an annual plague for the Packers to have their stars wind up injured. Football is inherently violent, injuries will occur, what matters is how the team adapts.

There are other examples of players coming back on the field early like Romeo Doubs who is clearly still dealing with his chest injury.

I am aware that a player will always want to get on that field. I don’t claim to have the magic answer on how to balance out the risk vs reward, it just seems the gamble has shifted.

Whether this change reflects evolving medical confidence, roster pressure, or a more aggressive competitive posture, it’s a noticeable departure from the franchise’s historically cautious playbook.

Matt LaFleur addressed their heavily injured squad at his presser yesterday.

I am hoping that the Packers can come together and move through the adversity into the post season. They have their divisional gauntlet starting this weekend against the Vikings, and it will be interesting to see if Matt LaFleur can scheme the team through injury into victory.
