Packers Release Quarterback Following Aaron Rodgers’ Arrival

As the Aaron Rodgers era continues in Green Bay, Blake Bortles‘ brief time with the Packers has come to an end.

Rodgers reported to training camp today after three months of uncertainty about whether or not he’d suit up for Green Bay in 2021. In a corresponding move, the Packers released Bortles, who signed with the team in May.

With Rodgers as QB1 and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love backing him up, there was simply no room for Bortles. Green Bay will also have free agents Kurt Benkert and Jacob Dolegala providing depth in training camp.

With Aaron Rodgers back in town, the Packers are releasing veteran QB Blake Bortles, a source said. Bortles signed a one-year, minimum contract with no guarantees on May 24 in the midst of Rodgers’ absence from the offseason program.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Bortles spent his first five pro seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He then moved on to the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.

Bortles spent much of the 2020 season on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad before the Rams signed him to their roster in December. He did not appear in any games.

For his career, Bortles has passed for 17,649 yards, 103 touchdowns and 75 interceptions. Just 29 years old, he should get an opportunity with another team in training camp this summer.
