GENERAL/PERSONNEL:
Some Packers injury updates: Dean Lowry (knee) Isaac Nauta (chest) DeAndre Thompkins (shoulder) Chris Blair (ankle) And of course, Jordan Love (shoulder). Demovsky [Nauta was placed on IR today.]
MRI on Packers’ QB Jordan Love’s shoulder this morning came back clean, per source. Love unlikely to miss time. Shefter
Matt LaFleur says Jordan Love’s shoulder injury is significant enough that he could miss a couple days of practice and even the Jets game this weekend. Schneidman [LaFleur did not rule Love out for the Jets game.]
Aaron Jones (hamstring) is back after missing last week. Za’Darius Smith (back) is finally off the non-football injury list. Demovsky
Kenny Clark not in first team period. He and Will Redmond are working on a side field. Stokes and King taking turns with starting secondary. Za’Darius Smith back with the 1s. 2) Back at practice: Za’Darius Smith, Aaron Jones, Kenny Clark, Equanimeous St. Brown and Will Redmond. Dean Lowry a new addition to the rehab group. Schneidman
This is not an inexact science – and I could very well be wrong – but my records have Dean Lowry’s last missed public practice as Aug. 23, 2017. Hodkiewicz
Matt LaFleur says it’s a big day, maybe week, for Kurt Benkert getting more reps with Jordan Love out: “It’s extremely valuable. He hasn’t gotten the reps that I know he would like, but it’s hard to rep more than two guys.” Wood [GB is working out QBs.]
90-minute practice today. Guys that didn’t play on Saturday “will get the majority” of the snaps. Schneidman
QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:
Aaron Rodgers gets Eric Stokes a couple reps later. Stokes lined up on Allen Lazard, who cuts across the middle. Stokes tries to jump the route, but Rodgers throws behind Lazard, away from coverage. Mark that one down for the wily vet. 2) In second team period, Eric Stokes gets first rep across from Jaire Alexander. He’s lined up over Davante Adams, and Aaron Rodgers targets him. Same thing that’s happened all camp, except this time Stokes jumps an out route and breaks up the pass. The rookie is getting better. Wood
Rodgers floats in a beauty from 21 to Lazard over Alexander in end zone. It was on other side of field and appears he was OB. Hodkiewicz
Rodgers boots right and throws it left for a TD to [a wide open] Begelton. Good grief. Schneidman
TIGHT ENDS:
Favorite part of this was finding out Aaron Rodgers loves…Bronson Kaufusi, who I think is TE7 right now. Schneidman
[Discussing Sternberger pretty candidly]: “That one play doesn’t really describe the player,” Outten said. “It’s more consistently what you’re putting in day in and day out. With his consistency, it’s kind of been sporadic.” it’s abundantly clear the team isn’t thrilled with his development and he could be playing for his Packers’ life the next few weeks. Schneidman
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:
Packers OL coach Adam Stenavich says “no one’s really stepped up and risen above the rest” in regard to the two guard spots with David Bakhtiari out. Jon Runyan Jr., Lucas Patrick and Ben Braden in contention for those two spots with Elgton Jenkins at LT. Schneidman
Packers weren’t kidding about being displeased with their guards in the preseason opener: First practice back, rookie Royce Newman gets his first chance at RG with the No. 1 OL. Ben Braden at LG. In the game it was, Lucas Patrick at RG and Jon Runyan at LG. Demovsky
The run game was “very bad,” Hackett said. Fundamentals and techniques, not mental errors, were the issue. Fixing that starts with tomorrow’s practice. Huber
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:
Keke said he’s put on 10 pounds to be stronger at the point of attack. 293 to about 303 now. Schneidman
Nice play by Packers rookie UDFA DT Jack Heflin on the screen… Heflin played at Iowa in 2020, but was a standout player for Northern Illinois before that (team defensive MVP). Stout iDL piece. 2) T.J. Slaton pretty much tackled the RB here while being fully engaged by the LG… This guy is a brick. Ben Fennell [Nice video of these two plays from the Texans preseason game which can be seen by going to Ben’s twitter (or Andy Herman’s).]
Within the 1st 9 snaps vs HST – Packers DT T.J. Slaton played 0T, 1T, 2iT, 3T, 4iT, 6T Wow. Gotta be honest – didn’t expect that. Fennell
DEFENSIVE BACKS:
CB Josh Jackson not going away. He comes up with a leaping INT of Kurt Benkert’s throw to Jace Sternberger in the EZ. 2) [OTOH} CB Kabion Ento moving up the charts it appears. He and Eric Stokes were the No. 2s ahead of Josh Jackson. The pair received reps with the 1s as part of the corner rotation. Silverstein
After top 4 CBs, Kabion Ento was first off the sideline. Then Josh Jackson came on. That’s your second team CB. Wood
