GENERAL/PERSONNEL:
Matt LaFleur still doesn’t have a timeline for when rookie WR Christian Watson will return from PUP almost a week into camp. “I told you,” he added, “no more expectations.” LaFleur says Watson “is getting better” with his knee. 2) TE Marcedes Lewis is not participating first padded practice today. He’s done this long enough anyway. 3) OL Cole Schneider, who dropped out of practice yesterday with an ankle injury, walking on the sideline now in a walking boot. Wood [Bad luck for Mr. Schneider. Could be the first instance of Salary Cap Melt if he requires an injury settlement. TGR]
Doubs looks a little shaken up after a punt return attempt. He’s walking slowly to the sideline and with a little limp. Will keep an eye on it. Meanwhile Hyman muffs a punt. And Doubs is right back out there so he seems fine. Still walking gingerly and checking his ankle tho. 2) Doubs out there on offense with no noticeable issue so seems any major issue was avoided. Herman
Matt LaFleur says it’ll be awhile until bottom half of depth charts become clearer: “We have to get into some of those preseason games, and get a chance to sort that out.” Wood
The NFL is docking the Dolphins two draft picks and suspending owner Stephen Ross as a result of the league’s tampering allegation. Pelissero [Picks are the Dolphins first rounder in 2023 and their third rounder in 2024. Steep. TGR]
QUARTERBACKS/WIDE RECEIVERS:
Mark me down as a lead pipe lock for Danny Davis on the practice squad. Don’t think he can crack the 53, and don’t think anyone claims him, but he looks the part and I think GB will be thrilled to get him on the p/s. Herman
Packers just did 25 1-on-1s between WRs/TEs and CBs/safeties with Rodgers and Love throwing. Will have notes on each in today’s story, but highlight came on 25th rep. Romeo Doubs burned Eric Stokes down the right sideline for a TD from Rodgers. Stokes slammed his helmet after. Schneidman [Schneidman’s article sounds good – it apparently give the results of each one on one, but it is behind The Athletics paywall.]
Quite a battle between Doubs and stokes in 1x1s. Stokes wins but may have been contact. Lazard beats Gafford on the outside with relative ease. Cobb beats Douglas clean. Fun matchup there. Deguara beats Scott. Watkins with an easy win on quick slant against Thomas. 2) Amari beats Savage on a slant. Fun battle Davis vs Davis. Shawn should have had the pick. Tyler comes up with it. Davis strips him. Danny Davis beats Ento (These are all 1x1s with offense with a big advantage). Dafney beats Leavitt Hyman had a step on Gafford but overthrown. 3) Winfree smokes Vaughn but Vaughn closes fast and it ends up incomplete. Holding called on Stokes against Doubs. Gaines pbu vs Amari. Mack beats Carpenter easy on a slant. Oooo Osiris Mitchell with a really nice play vs Ento. Nice play there. Lazard beats Gafford on slant. 4) Sal Canella stand up. Beautiful route vs Leavitt. Kiondre Thomas just dragged down Watkins off a sick move. Penalty. Cobb beats Douglas again. Good rep Shemar vs Winfree. Winfree catch but no gain. Gaines I think knocked it away vs Toure. Good session for him. 5) Deguara with a beautiful double move vs Savage for a big gain. Danny Davis with a gorgeous route vs Gafford. Gafford was in a blender. Doubs wins deep vs Stokes. Td for sure. That does it for 1 on 1s. Herman [I suspect this series of tweets by Andy Herman constitutes all or most of the 25 one on ones. TGR]
Nice comeback route from Sammy Watkins, creating separation against Eric Stokes on last red-zone rep. Aaron Rodgers gives Watkins a fist bump after the catch. 2) Romeo Doubs strikes again. Perfect ball to the right, back corner end zone from Jordan Love, and Doubs plucks it after separating from Rico Gafford. The rookie has been balling. Wood
Love with his best throw of camp. Hits Watkins in stride deep to the sidelines. Watkins’ biggest play too. 2) Back to team. Stokes with great coverage on Watkins on a 9 route. Ball overthrown anyway but that was a great rep by 21. Love hits Toure over the middle for a nice pickup. 3) Rodgers hits Amari over the middle for a nice pickup. Amari got lots of separation on that one. Savage was the closest coming in from safety. Really nice run by Goodson. Love is having a nice day. Hits Dafney in stride over the middle. 4) Love to Doubs in the corner of the end zone on a gorgeous throw and catch. That was beautiful. Td offense. 5) Hyman has had a nice day today. Catches a pass in team with the young guys at work. Etling in the throw. Hyman with another catch from Love along the sidelines. Herman
Love had a really nice practice today, especially against the blitz. Good response after two minute yesterday. Hodkiewicz [And from Silverstein: QB Jordan Love is making more throws that look like they’re from a skilled passer. Hit Sammy Watkins in stride on a deep corner and in 3rd and goal drill, threw a pretty pass into back corner that only Romeo Doubs could get. 87 made a fingertip catch and got feet down.]
Long way to go, but… Danny Davis is having a good camp. He looks legit. Looking forward to seeing him in preseason games. 2) Rodgers adjusts presnap to a five wide look, hits Amari Rodgers on a quick slant. Perfect anticipation throw, knew right where the window would be in the defense. Nagler
RUNNING BACKS:
Aaron Jones almost made a dazzling, one-handed catch running open on corner route in red zone. Aaron Rodgers missed the throw high, and he did not look pleased with himself. Wood
BJ Baylor having a nice day. Had a couple really nice blitz pickups and now a big run to the outside. Herman
TIGHT ENDS:
Love hits Mack in stride to the outside. Nice bounce back day for 10 today. Herman
OFFENSIVE LINE:
Offensive line – Yosh – Runyan – Myers – Newman – Tom today. 2) Team – Josh Myers did a great job getting to the 2nd level and sealing the lb on a nice hb draw to Dillon. 3) CVL and Menet opening up the left side. [Menet is a center, so is CVL playing LG/LT?] 3) How good is Rashan Gary? He just split a double team of Nijman & JRJ for a pressure. Unreal power from him. Herman
OT Yosh Nijman, standing up Rashan Gary twice. Nijman didn’t take any reps after that. It was a good place to stop. Wood
Zach Tom is the right tackle today and looked good in one on ones there. Yosh at left. Hodkiewicz
DEFENSIVE LINE:
Lowry just blew up a run play vs Tyler Davis in team, nice cut back from Jones to get as much as he could. 2) Jonathan Ford – hello. Bursts through the line for a stop on Goodson. Garvin was there setting a strong edge too. Herman
Ford just about took the handoff on an attempted run by the 2s. Great instant disruption. Nagler [same play as #2 above.]
Also, Jarran Reed has been in Rodgers’ face the last couple days. Multiple times during that close red-zone period. Schneidman
Jarran Reed with a pressure on Rodgers, forcing him to roll to the left and throw incomplete for Watkins who was double covered. Herman
Rookie Devonte Wyatt showed his athleticism in one-on-ones, winning two of three reps vs. LG Jon Runyan. Wyatt’s speed forced a hold on first rep. After Runyan stood him up, Wyatt came back with impressive hands to shock Runyan out of position, then explode past him. Wood
Kenny Clark and Dean Lowry combined for nearly 60% of the total snaps on the Packers’ D-line last season. The addition of Jarran Reed and Devonte Wyatt, mixed with an emerging young core, could help open up GB’s defensive front in 2022. “It makes my life easier,” said Clark. Hodkiewicz
LINEBACKERS:
Bootleg but Campbell isn’t fooled at all – he’s all over Dafney in the flat. Rashan Gary not getting moved in the run game. He gets a stop at the line. 2) Rodgers tries to hit Doubs deep but De’Vondre Campbell gets deep in his drip, elevates, and tips the ball away at the last second. All-pro play by Campbell. That was super impressive. 3) Nice misdirection on a toss to Baylor for about 6. Wilborn did a good job getting over for the stop. Dafney just owned Ramsey in pass pro but Etling misses Mitchell 4) Rodgers tries to hit Dillon who fell down on the play. Quay had good coverage anyway. 5) Garvin showing up in run defense today. Just beat OT George Moore to make a stop. BJ Baylor just did everything he could but 5 defenders immediately surrounded him. Defense rallying to the football again. [Garvin vs. Moore is twos versus threes – TGR.] 5) Tipa shoots through the line for a pressure and may have been held but Rodgers fires to a leaping Sammy Watkins for a big completion. 6) Kobe Jones beats G. Moore off the edge. Nice job flattening to the qb. 7) McDuffie comes screaming through on a blitz. 8) Tipa with a nice pressure off the edge against Caleb Jones. 9) Garvin with a strip on Etling. Another player who had a really nice day. Carpenter with a quick tackle on Hyman and that does it. Herman
You can tell Isaiah McDuffie playing faster this summer, on both defense and ST. Good pressure to force incompletion through end zone. Hodkiewicz
DEFENSIVE BACKS:
CB Jaire Alexander has taken his pads off and isn’t practicing. No sign if it’s an injury. He’s watching from the sideline and has a football under his arm. Silverstein
Jaire Alexander hasn’t done any of the 11 on 11 today. He was on the field for individual but that’s it. Shemar Jean-Charles played outside in the nickel. In the base, Rasul Douglas moved outside. 2) Alexander seems to be OK. He was chatting with fans and then put bands around his ankles and did this (in background behind the QBs) during special teams. Demovsky
Not injury-related for Alexander. Huber
Shawn Davis just came screaming up from safety, I think he would have had a stop about 2 yards in the backfield on Goodson. 2) Gaines with a nice blitz off the edge, Love throws deep to Doubs on a nice throw but Doubs can’t hold on and once again gets up a little gingerly. [This is later in practice, after Andy Herman’s first couple of tweets on Doubs, so it is a little concerning. TGR] 3) Hyman with a great block on the outside on Innis Gaines on a quick throw to try outside. Got Gaines on the ground. 4) Nice run fit by Innis Gaines leaves Baylor nowhere to go. 5) Kiondre Thomas with a pbu in red zone on a throw form Love. Herman
Holy moly what a grab by Romeo Doubs in the back right corner of the end zone through contested coverage during a close red-zone period. Perfect touch pass from Jordan Love and Doubs touched both feet right in front of us. Ref threw a DPI flag on Rico Gafford, too. Schneidman [same play as noted under QB/WR section]
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Rico Gafford and Amari Rodgers started punt coverage as the gunners. 2) Dallin Leavitt is a pitbull on teams. Definitely plays with some zip. Hodkiewicz
Vernon Scott with a great rep as a gunner – Gafford was trying to jam on the play. Romeo Doubs with a couple misplays on punt returns. Couldn’t field the ball in either instance. Now Amari Rodgers with a muff on a punt return. It’s a little windy but returners are having issues. 2) Meanwhile Hyman muffs a punt. Herman
Amari Rodgers isn’t the only punt returner struggling today. Rookie Romeo Doubs has misplayed two, and Ishmael Hyman muffed one as well. Rough day with a stiff wind blowing straight at the returners. 2) Amari Rodgers. Muffed punt. Looked familiar. Wood
Runyan snaps for Brkic field goal. Good kick, anyway. Huber
There were a lot more mentions of players generally considered to be farther down the depth chart. You can check out Andy Herman twitter by clicking here.
