Slowly but surely, we’re inching closer to a resolution in the Aaron Rodgers saga.
According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Jets would send the Packers a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick that could mature into a first-round pick based on team performance escalators.
The holdup, however, is that New York wants some draft compensation in return just in case Rodgers doesn’t play football in 2024.
“A sticking point in the talks is the Jets seeking an element of protection built into the trade, specifically one that sends some 2025 draft compensation to New York from Green Bay if Rodgers does not play in 2024 and beyond,” Robinson wrote.
Rodgers has flirted with retirement in the past, so it makes sense that New York wants insurance.
A deal between the #Packers and #Jets to swap Aaron Rodgers for two high draft picks is taking shape. But one lingering hangup is whether the Packers will agree to some draft “give back” protection if Rodgers doesn’t play in the 2024 season. Details: https://t.co/DmpXtuKwf2

Another potential holdup is that Green Bay wants “straight shot” draft picks, according to Robinson. The front office doesn’t want any conditional picks in return for Rodgers.
With the NFL Draft roughly a month away, the Jets and Packers may have to step on the gas and put things into motion.
