Week 2 of preseason for the Packers is underway. The Packers held a joint practice with the Colts but were missing several of their key players due to an early case of the injury bug.
The most notable player falling victim to the injury bug is quarterback Jordan Love. In the first preseason game against the Jets, Love suffered an injury to a ligament in his left thumb.
He has since had surgery and was not a participant in the joint practices with the Colts. “Surgery went well and he’s in great spirits. He’s here with us,” per head coach Matt LaFleur earlier this week.
The expectations from general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur seem to indicate that Love will be back to participating next week.
Initially, the plan was for the starters to practice against the Colts but not play in the actual preseason game. Then the starters would be put into action against the Seahawks next week in the preseason finale.
Matt LaFleur is now claiming that it is “highly unlikely” that we will see Love in action against the Seahawks next week, but he remains confident that Love will be ready to go week one against the Lions.
After a frustrating battle with his knee injury sustained week one against the Eagles last season, Love stated “I think with the timeframe that we have right now, finishing up training camp and preseason and heading into the season with the choice to be going into the season 100 percent healthy was definitely the call I wanted to make.”
Additionally, the backup quarterback Malik Willis commanded the first team offense without Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and Savion Williams.
While Christian Watson continues his ACL recovery, Romeo Doubs was injured during a collision with safety Evan Williams earlier this week.
The Packers are still without star safety Xavier McKinney as he continues to deal with his calf injury as well as newly acquired cornerback Nate Hobbs who is battling a knee injury.
All in all, there is no better time to get the injuries out of the way than in preseason. Even without many key players, it seemed the Packers held their own quite easily against the Colts.
Obviously, the goal for regular season is to remain as healthy as possible. Let’s hope this is the first and last time the Packers encounter the injury bug this season.
