After trading up to draft Jordan Love 26th overall in 2020, the time has finally arrived for him to take over for Aaron Rodgers. But the Packers have another decision to make on their new QB1: whether or not to pick up his fifth-year option.
For teams like the Bengals and Chargers, it was merely a formality. However, Green Bay finds itself in a very different position.
During Saturday’s press conference, GM Brian Gutekunst wasn’t ready to say if the team would commit to Love’s fully-guaranteed $20 million salary in 2024.
“Yeah, I’ve got to figure that out by Tuesday, I guess, yeah,” Gutekunst said. “We’re kind of still working through that. We’ve been so focused on the draft. We’ve had some preliminary conversations, but we’ll get to that before Tuesday.”
“It’s a lot of money for a guy who hasn’t played,” the general manager admitted. “But at the same time, obviously, we’re moving forward with him. So, we’ll figure that out by Tuesday.”
Jordan Love has made just one start over the last two years. In his 10 career appearances, he’s completed 60.2% percent of his passes for 606 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.
