Packers, fans, get what they want out this year’s draft

April 28, 2025 by Howard Brubaker

The Green Bay Packers and the city of Green Bay closed out a successful weekend with the final day of NFL Draft today. It was a wildly successful event with over 600,000 in attendance over the three days. That puts it behind only Detroit as the largest crowd for the draft since it started rotating cities. The NFL knows how to put on a show.

Of course, the success of the draft will hinge on the career of wide receiver Matthew Golden, but the Packers seemed to have addressed most of their needs as well. It’s clear the woeful offense the Packers put on display in their three game losing streak to end the season was not going to go unaddressed.

The Packers selected offensive tackle Anthony Belton in the second round. This dude is huge and is going to push for a starting job right from the jump I think. The offensive line is going to look different this year I think. Bigger, stronger, better.

One of the most intriguing picks is wide receiver Savion Williams, a multifaceted player who can and should be used as such. This guy can do it all and could really help on short yardage wildcat plays. And he is a good passer, so I hope they use him that way, too, the option pass is totally underused in the NFL if you ask me.

Defense gets help, too

The Packers addressed their need at edge rusher in rounds four and five with Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver, respectively. Sorrell was actually in the green room and Rodger Goodell announced him and he got the bear hug from him. It was very cool.

I was there to see the Packers select defensive tackle Warren Brinson in round six. That was kind of neat. The Packers added a DB and another offensive line in my seventh round to finish things up. The only real surprise was not taking a cornerback earlier with expected departure of Jaire Alexander. At least that is the media’s view. I think he stays.

You never know who will pan out or not but if the Packers hit the top three players in this draft it could be enough to get them back to Super Bowl contender status. I really like those three selections. Can’t wait to see them all when they get to Green Bay.

Green Bay put on a show

As for the draft itself it was just incredible. I was able to attend Thursday and today and just couldn’t believe what they were able to do in little old Green Bay. To have this many people attend just blew my mind. Original estimates were 250,000 people. They more than doubled that number and were still counting.

And after two days there was only one arrest. Today my friend parked his bike unlocked near the entrance and came back two hours later to find it right where left it. Only in Green Bay. It might be the last draft in Green Bay in my lifetime but it won’t be the last draft in Green Bay I’m sure. Not if they keep rotating it around. The spectacle of Lambeau Field and the Titletown District was made for this event. Here is a hearty job well done to the NFL.
