Packers extend contract of special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia

January 27, 2025 by Packers Wire

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Rich Bisaccia and the Green Bay Packers have agreed on a contract extension to keep him as the team’s special teams coordinator for two more seasons. Bisaccia, who joined the Packers in 2022, had one year remaining on his contract.

Per Silverstein, there were rumors around the league that Bisaccia, 64, might retire. To entice him to stay, Matt LaFleur added another year onto Bisaccia’s deal.

LaFleur hired Bisaccia in 2022 and promoted him to assistant head coach in 2023.

Upon his initial hiring, Bisaccia was tasked with revitalizing Green Bay’s struggling special teams unit. In his first season, the Packers ranked 22nd in Rick Gosselin’s annual special teams rankings after finishing dead last the year before. However, in 2023, they dropped back down to 29th. Gosselin’s 2024 rankings have not been released, but the expectations for Green Bay are low.

The season got off to a rocky start with rookie kicker Brayden Narverson, who was brought in to replace former sixth-round draft pick Anders Carlson. Carlson was released before the start of the regular season after failing to show improvement during training camp and the preseason. Narveson was released after missing an NFL-high five field goal attempts in the first six games. The Packers’ kicking game didn’t find stability until they brought in veteran Brandon McManus.

Outside of kicking, the Green Bay’s special teams made some costly mistakes in 2024. In the regular season finale, the punt team was faked out by a trick return, leading to a 94-yard touchdown in a loss to the Chicago Bears. The following week, Keisean Nixon fumbled the opening kickoff in the Packers’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round.

Despite these issues, Bisaccia will also assist LaFleur with in-game management, although it’s unclear if this is an added role or an existing one.

In related news, Luke Getsy was also given the title of senior offensive assistant. Getsy, who was Green Bay’s quarterbacks coach from 2019-2021 before taking a couple of offensive coordinator jobs, could have his title changed if current offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich leaves.
