Packers Bringing In Notable Tight End For Workout

The Green Bay Packers have decided to bring in notable tight end for a workout next week. Similar to recently signed Jacksonville Jaguar Tim Tebow, it’s another former quarterback who’s made the move to the pass-catching position.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Packers are bringing in tight end Tommy Stevens to tryout for a roster spot next Monday. He’ll be joined be a group of other players in Green Bay including defensive back Rashard Robinson and nose tackle Sterling Johnson.

Stevens, 24, came into the league just last year as a quarterback with the New Orleans Saints. During training camp, he made the move to tight end after showing versatility as a pass-catcher and runner.

Things didn’t pan out for Stevens in New Orleans despite a brief stint on the Saints’ practice squad. After he was released, he spent the early part of this year on the Carolina Panthers active roster, where he was listed as a quarterback.

Stevens appears to be headed back to the tight end position for his latest workout and will try to earn his first major opportunity in the NFL with the Packers.

The #Packers are bringing in Tommy Stevens for a workout Monday as a tight end, per source. Stevens— the former college QB and #Saints draft pick — is one of several upcoming Green Bay workouts, including DB Rashard Robinson and NT Sterling Johnson.

Stevens proved to be a dynamic quarterback during his college days, which has helped make the transition to tight end a bit smoother. After spending four years at Penn State in a hybrid-role, he got his breakthrough during his fifth college season at Mississippi State. He completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 1,155 yards and scrambled for an additional 381 yards on the ground. He scored 15 total touchdowns and threw just five interceptions.

The Packers situation at quarterback remains up in the air due to the ongoing Aaron Rodgers drama, so the team seems to be focusing on other positions for the time being. Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis highlight Green Bay’s tight end group for now, but Stevens could be a nice compliment for the unit.

He might even be able to carve out his own unique role with the team, if he impresses in Monday’s workout.
