Packers 2022 Opponents Look Ahead

April 23, 2022 by Packers Talk

The Packers 2022 opponents have already been announced, it’s just a matter of finding out when they will play each other. The official schedule release date this year is May 12th, with planned teasers by the league coming earlier, such as the Week 2 Thursday Night game being revealed during Round 1 of draft night and the International Series games being released on May 4th.

The schedule being announced is one of my favorite days of the year. It stirs up all kinds of thoughts in me. “The Packers play in Buffalo in November? I have to get there!” or “Could I get an early flight home for Thanksgiving to see the Packers in Minnesota?” It’s kind of like a mini Christmas in May for me, a time where I can fantasize about trips and get a firm grasp on the teams itinerary. It usually takes me 24-48 hours and by then, I have the Packers schedule memorized exactly, down to the times of kickoff.

While we still have to wait a few weeks for the official schedule, here’s who the Packers will be playing in 2022.

Home

Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions

Minnesota Vikings

New York Giants

Dallas Cowboys

Los Angeles Rams

New York Jets

New England Patriots

Tennessee Titans

With the new 17 game schedule that was introduced to the league last year, a team will play either 8 home games and 9 road games or vice versa. In 2021, the NFC had to play the extra road game with the AFC getting the extra home game. This season, it’s reversed and the Packers will host the “extra” game. This years opponent for the NFC North is the team that finished in the same place as them from the AFC South. Because the Packers finished 1st in their division and the Titans finished 1st in theirs, that is the matchup in 2022.

Green Bay however will lose a game in Lambeau Field this upcoming season because they are playing one of their “Home” games in London. The Packers are the only team in the NFL that has yet to play in an international game. As Zach Kruse points out, it’s likely the Packers will play one of these teams.

Can’t imagine the Packers would want to lose a home game against the Cowboys, Patriots or Rams in London.

Best options for opponent: Giants, Jets or Titans.

As already mentioned, the NFL will announce their international series schedule on May 4th.

Outside of the standard division games against Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit, the Packers have some interesting home opponents. They welcome the defending Super Bowl Champion Rams, whom the Packers hosted at Lambeau Field last year and won 36-28. They also play Dallas at home for the first time since 2016. Bill Belichick, Mac Jones and company travel to Wisconsin too for the first time since 2014, back when Tom Brady was New England’s quarterback and Davante Adams was just a rookie.

Away

Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions

Minnesota Vikings

Washington Commanders

Philadelphia Eagles

Buffalo Bills

Miami Dolphins

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Matt LaFleur’s team has a monster slate of juicy road games in 2022. The Packers travel twice to Florida, where Aaron Rodgers’ led teams are 3-5 there in his career. A Rodgers/Brady showdown will most likely be a night primetime game after the NFL didn’t have that as one in 2020. A return to Miami, the first time there since the epic Aaron Rodgers game winning touchdown drive in 2014, should be fun against the up and coming Dolphins.

Packers vs Bills is the best game on the schedule, in my opinion. Two small, blue-collar cities get to see their teams play each other where both fan bases have Super Bowl High hopes. Josh Allen did play the Packers in 2018, when he was just a rookie in his 4th ever NFL game. The game in 2022 will be only the 2nd time Rodgers has played in Buffalo in his career, the only other time coming in 2014 in a surprising Week 15 loss.

Trips to Philadelphia and Washington complete the Packers road campaign, outside of the divisional games. Aaron Rodgers is 3-0 all-time in Philadelphia, including a playoff win and is 1-3 in Washington, the lone victory also being a playoff win.
