Roughly three weeks ago, Aaron Rodgers announced that he intends to play for the Jets next season. Despite stating his desire for a change of scenery, Green Bay has not yet traded him.
So, when will a blockbuster trade between the Jets and Packers occur? Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk believes a deal involving Rodgers shouldn’t go down until Day 2 of the draft.
“The draft starts in 20 days, with round one. Round two starts three weeks from tonight,” Florio wrote. “Given that the presumed package of picks starts with a second-rounder in 2023, and in light of the reality that negotiations in any industry last until the moment the clock strikes midnight, it makes no sense at this point to do the deal at any point before round two arrives.”
While this may not be what Jets fans want to hear, this saga should end at some point this month.
At the end of the day, the Packers probably want draft picks they can use on this year’s team. If that’s the case, making a deal either on Day 1 or Day 2 makes sense.
From the Jets’ perspective, it’s all about getting Rodgers in the building as soon as possible.
As far as compensation is concerned, the Jets aren’t expected to part ways with a 2023 first-round pick. However, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports said they could offer the Packers a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick that could turn into a first-rounder.
