Here’s what’s happened in Green Bay on Thursday
Based on conversations I’ve had, the working assumption is that the top six players in the draft are essentially locked in. The only question is which teams will be on the clock at number two to select Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter or at number five to pick Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. I’m more than willing to be wrong, but this is the information I have as of an hour before the draft.
Best guess is the top six picks are locked in:
1 TEN Ward
2 CLE/JAX Hunter
3 NYG Carter
4 NE Campbell
5 JAX/CHI/DEN Jeanty
6 LV BanksExcited to be wrong, but it seems like the draft starts at #7 with the Jets

If you’re wondering why teams are locked into LSU’s Will Campbell and Texas’ Kelvin Banks Jr. as top-six picks: It’s because they’re viewed as leaders. Campbell, Banks and Georgia edge defender Jalon Walker are all seen as culture-setting type of selections, which is why they’re highly valued by teams who don’t jive with a lot of the personalities in this second tier of talent. Remember, New England hired Mike Vrabel, and Las Vegas is now co-owned by Tom Brady. They are trying to establish the “Patriot Way” in Year 1 of the new administration.
The Jacksonville Jaguars did pull off the trade and will go from the fifth overall pick to the second overall pick, giving the Cleveland Browns their 2026 first-round pick, the fifth overall pick in this draft and their second-round pick in this draft for the selection. This is one of the most expensive trades for a non-quarterback ever, especially considering that the Jaguars did so to only move up three spots in the draft.
ESPN Sources:
Browns are trading the No. 2 overall pick, a fourth-round pick (No. 104), and a sixth-round pick (No. 200) to the Jaguars.

The first “surprise” selection of the draft is Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham with the fifth overall pick. Some believed that Graham would be the second defensive tackle off of the board this week, with Walter Nolen of Ole Miss being ahead of him on some teams’ draft boards.
There was uncertainty about what the Cleveland Browns would do if it pulled the trigger on their trade offer with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Graham was clearly the player they were eyeing in that trade down, considering that the rest of the draft has been chalky.
There will be no trade-up for running back Ashton Jeanty for the Chicago Bears or Denver Broncos. While the two teams were clearly interested in moving up for the running back in the fifth and sixth overall pick slots, the Browns and Las Vegas Raiders held onto their selections. The Raiders ended up taking Jeanty with the sixth pick.
So much for that Tetairoa McMillan drop we had heard projected by so many people. The Arizona receiver goes eighth overall to the Carolina Panthers, far from the 23rd overall that some had prognosticated in mock drafts. McMillan is the first Green Bay Packers visitor to come off the board. Other projected first-round picks the Packers had in include Texas receiver Matthew Golden, Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State left tackle Josh Simmons, Ole Miss defensive tackle Walter Nolen, Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams, Texas A&M defensive end Shemar Stewart and Tennessee defensive end James Pearce Jr.
Well, I think we figured out why the Chicago Bears were trying to trade up so hard from the 10th pick. The team ended up taking tight end Colston Loveland out of Michigan, making him the first top-10 tight end selected since Kyle Pitts and only one of three taken since the 2014 draft. To say the least, history doesn’t usually pan out for these picks. A top 10 selected tight end hasn’t signed a second contract with the team that drafted them since Vernon Davis back in the 2006 class. Loveland is also dealing with a shoulder injury that required surgery in January.
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, who covers the Green Bay Packers, said the team’s primary draft target is Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams, who the Packers brought in on a pre-draft visit. He just went off the board to the San Francisco 49ers with the 11th pick, so the next man up, according to Demovsky’s reporting, is Texas A&M defensive end Shemar Stewart, another offseason visitor.
Another Packers visitor comes off of the board at the 16th overall pick as the Arizona Cardinals selected Walter Nolen of Ole Miss. Nolen, a former five-star defensive tackle, enrolled at six different high schools and colleges. Some thought he had an outside chance of being selected in the top 10 picks, despite his consensus draft board ranking being that of a borderline first-rounder.
And here starts the defensive line run. From the 13th pick to the 17th pick, four defensive linemen have come off the board, most recently Shemar Stewart of Texas A&M. At this point, the favorite for the Packers’ selection at #23 might be Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who has a lot in common with former Green Bay early selections in Eric Stokes, Kevin King and Damarious Randall.
Here’s a little bit of a surprise: Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka goes 20th overall and over Texas receiver Matthew Golden. Egbuka was generally ranked behind Golden in the draft process and wasn’t considered a lock to be picked in the first round. Egbuka was one of the Packers’ visits. To refresh, Green Bay’s available visitors who are considered first-round picks are: Golden, Ohio State left tackle Josh Simmons and Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr.
One of the most popular picks for the Packers over the offseason was Derrick Harmon of Oregon. Unfortunately, he won’t be coming to Green Bay, as he went two selections prior to the team’s first-round pick, ending up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Below are the highest-ranked defensive linemen available according to the consensus draft board, following the Steelers’ pick:
- #17: Mike Green, Marshall (EDGE)
- #30: Donovan Ezeiruaku, Boston College (EDGE)
- #32: James Pearce Jr., Tennessee (EDGE)
- #41: Nic Scourton, Texas A&M (EDGE)
- #44 Tyleik Williams, Ohio State (DL)
YOUR THIRTEEN-TIME WORLD CHAMPION GREEN BAY PACKERS HAVE TAKEN A FIRST-ROUND RECEIVER FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2002: TEXAS RECEIVER MATTHEW GOLDEN.
The Houston Texans have traded down from the 25th overall pick, following the run on offensive linemen, and given the New York Giants the opportunity to trade up to #25 for Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. Hey, they went to the Ole Miss quarterback well once and it brought them two Super Bowls. Might not be the worst idea.
