The Green Bay Packers would have had to look awfully hard to find a first-round draft pick who exhibits a better attitude than Matthew Golden. The former Texas Longhorns wide receiver is saying all the right things this offseason as he gears up for his rookie season, and it’s encouraging to hear.
This weekend, Golden spoke at a football camp near his hometown to talk about giving back to kids in his community. From that perspective, he’s sure to be a hit in Green Bay, a place where that effort is massively appreciated.
And then there’s his work ethic both on and off the field, which seems to be beyond question. Golden is confident in his ability to contribute to the Packers immediately, but he’s not resting on his laurels, instead taking in all he can from the playbook and getting ready for training camp.
One quality that he sees in himself that will be particularly useful for the team is versatility. Golden lined up all over the offense for the Longhorns, and he expects to be able to do so for the Packers as well. That’s great news for Matt LaFleur and company, who would surely love to move him around to create advantageous matchups.
It’s not like Golden is particularly small, either. One of the Packers’ best and most versatile wide receivers of the past two decades was Greg Jennings, who measured in at 5-11 1/8 and 197 pounds at the 2006 NFL Combine. By comparison, Golden was just 1/8-inch shorter and six pounds lighter than Jennings.
