Look: Packers Have Unveiled A New Throwback Uniform

The Green Bay Packers have one of the most iconic looks in the NFL. The franchise has been known to dip back into the archives for uniforms every so often.

The team’s most frequent throwback is probably the late 1920s-early 1930s era dark blue uniform, which has received mixed reviews over the year. This year, they’re trying out a new old look that is a bit more familiar.

For their Week 7 game against the Washington Football Team, the Packers are going with a 1950s era look. It maintains the classic green and gold, with logoless helmets and jerseys. The most flair on these jerseys probably comes with the two gold shoulder stripes. It’s a simple but very clean look.

This look dates back to 1950, when Gene Ronzani took over as the second-ever head coach of the historic franchise. While he lasted less than four years, he succeeded in one thing: making the Green Bay Packers adopt green as their signature color, moving on from the Curly Lambeau-era navy blue uniforms.

The Packers first put on green jerseys with gold sleeves under Lambeau in 1935. Those lasted through the following season, when the team won its fourth NFL Championship under the legendary coach, but they moved to the classic Lambeau-era navy blue look in 1937.

“The 1950s were one of the most interesting times in our organization’s rich history, creating the bridge between two of the greatest eras in pro football,” Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said of the uniforms. “With the NFL growing rapidly, this time period set the stage for the construction of Lambeau Field and for the team’s success in the 1960s and beyond. We hope our fans enjoy celebrating our history with this new alternate uniform.”

That game against Washington is scheduled for Oct. 24 at Lambeau Field.
