Alexander appeared virtually last week, but wasn’t in Green Bay for voluntary offseason work on the field.
On today’s episode of “What’s Going to Happen with Jaire Alexander?” the Packers’ highest-paid cornerback was not present for this week’s voluntary in-person workouts.
Alexander participated in last week’s virtual offseason work, but head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed today that Alexander was not present for any of the in-person work the Packers did this week.
“To be honest with you, I don’t have many updates in regards to where we are in that whole situation,” LaFleur said. “I just know we’re trying to work through it.”
Alexander’s absence was reported earlier this week, and it’s not terribly surprising that he didn’t arrive unannounced. Had there been a significant change in his status, it would have been headline news.
The Packers started their offseason program on April 21, conducting a week of virtual work before moving to the field on April 28. They’ll hold a rookie minicamp this weekend, giving the coaches a glimpse of their new draft picks before the rest of the work starts in earnest during Organized Team Activities later this month and minicamp in June.
There’s been a little movement on the Alexander front recently. Yesterday, NFL analyst Albert Breer hypothesized that the Packers and Alexander were more likely than not to repair their relationship, albeit at the price of a re-worked contract for the Packers’ 2018 first-round pick. But for now, it seems like the standoff is still a long way from being resolved. Both sides may be more agreeable to a reunion than they were in the past, but until whatever happens actually happens, the Packers, Alexander, and Packers fans have little choice but to play the waiting game.
The Packers could certainly use the additional defensive back depth Alexander could provide. They didn’t add a cornerback until the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and without Alexander in the fold, they risk entering the 2025 season with very little depth at outside cornerback.
