The fans of the Green Bay Packers often make fun of the fans of the Chicago Bears’ constant celebration of being offseason champions. While the Bears continue to celebrate their summer, the Packers 2025 offseason may have been better.
May 2023
While not occurring in 2025, the announcement of Green Bay as the host of the 2025 NFL draft set the table for the Packers 2025 offseason. The most important event of the NFL offseason was given to one of the oldest and most important football cities in America.
The success of Jordan Love’s first two seasons as the Packers quarterback immediately after this announcement certainly built excitement for fans. The 2025 draft would be crucial in determining the future of this young and talented team.
March
While free agency was not the most exciting part of the Packers 2025 offseason, general manager Brian Gutekunst did make several moves to improve the team. The Packers did not re-sign draft disappointments Eric Stokes and Josh Meyers, but did let defensive role players TJ Slaton and Eric Wilson go as well. Questions started to swirl about the future of Jaire Alexander, but went unanswered as he was not extended, cut, or traded.
This gave room for Green Bay to sign a few free agents at positions of need. Signing left guard Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs were the only major signings the Packers did in March. Both players were celebrated as decent starters, but did not stir the pot for most Packers fans. The pot-stirring had to wait until the first night of the draft.
April
Mark Murphy’s years of work in getting the draft to Green Bay in his final year as the Packers president earned him a unique capstone celebration: he would announce the Packers first selection. With that announcement, he got the opportunity to announce the end of the Packers 1st round wide receiver drought when he announced they had selected Matthew Golden at pick 23.
Besides getting an exuberant reaction from the home crowd, Golden was a smart choice for the Packers. Despite the team having better wide receiver depth than many other teams, none of the receivers had stepped up to become a number one target for Jordan Love. Golden has the chance to be that player with his combination of speed, route-running savvy, and excellent hands.
The Packers also selected Anthony Belton, a massive and athletic offensive lineman who comes to Green Bay with the nickname “Escalade.” In the third round, they returned to the wide receiver pool and took Savion Williams, a uniquely athletic player who could excel as a gadget player with Matt Lafleur. Other selections included defensive end Barryn Sorrell, defensive end Collin Oliver, defensive tackle Warren Brinson, cornerback Micah Robinson, and offensive lineman John Williams.
The undrafted rookie class that were signed a few days after the draft produced a few gems for the Packers. The primary player in this group was nose tackle Nazir Stackhouse who continued the Packers 20 year streak of having an undrafted rookie on the opening day roster. Additionally, undrafted rookie linebacker Jamon Johnson made the Packers practice squad.
June
In the doldrums of the Packers 2025 offseason between the draft and training camp, there was one major move for the Packers. After teasing a possible trade, Jaire Alexander was released by the team. Alexander was signed by the Baltimore Ravens just over a week after his release from the Packers.
July
The heat of midsummer coincided with the heat of the NFL regular season as training camp began. The end of the Packers 2025 offseason began when their camp started on July 23. The Packers were an exceptionally hot team to start, as right tackle Zach Tom signed a 4 year extension to keep Jordan Love on his feet.
Although training camp buzz is rightfully forgotten once the regular season begins, there were a few repeating items from reporters at the Packers training facility. One was the abilities of first round rookie Matthew Golden to both get open and make incredible catches. Another was the improvement from the defensive line as pass rushers, especially former first round pick Lukas Van Ness. Unfortunately, the third note was the numerous injuries that happened to Packers during camp.
August
As the Packers 2025 offseason built momentum into the season, the team was met with challenges and incredible opportunities. Unfortunately, the injury bug continued to plague the team. Nate Hobbs had surgery on his knee to fix an issue that will hopefully help him be 100% healthy for the season. Wide receiver Jayden Reed revealed he has a Jones fracture on his foot that kept him out of all preseason games and may limit his availability and ability once the regular season starts. Jordan Love required a minor surgery on his left thumb after hitting it on a helmet in a preseason game.
In the first preseason game, the Packers disappointed fans with a 30-10 loss to the New York Jets. The message from the players and coaches aligned with the game film: there was a lot to clean up. The second game, a 23-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, looked much better from the Packers especially during the second-half comeback. Finally, the Packers ended the preseason with a dominant 20-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks. The defense looked especially good against rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe as they kept him to one scoring drive while sacking him 5 times and earning 4 turnovers.
The big news of August happened just a few days after roster cutdown day. On August 28th, the Packers confirmed months of rumors by trading and signing Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Micah Parsons. In return, the Cowboys received two 1st round picks and veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark. The celebration of Packers fans was echoed by both media and betting pundits, as the Packers are now favored by many to be the favorite to win the NFC North. Parsons’ contract made him the highest paid non-quarterback in the NFL and this will have a strong influence on the Packers roster decisions in the coming seasons.
Conclusion
At the end of the exciting Packers 2025 offseason, most Packers fans have high expectations for their team. Commentators inside and outside Green Bay believe this team has the capability to win the division, maybe the conference, and possibly even the Superbowl. Whether or not this happens, Packers fans have certainly had a memorable offseason this year.
