Deebo Samuel’s trade market is starting to take shape. On Friday morning, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler named three teams that are being linked to the San Francisco 49ers’ versatile receiver.
The New York Jets, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers are being labeled as potential suitors for Samuel.
“There are a few teams that could have interest here – Jets, Lions, Packers,” Fowler said on Get Up. “Those are some early names that can get in the mix here. We’ll see how far they’re willing to go because this is a guy you have to give up a baseline of a first-round pick to acquire only to pay $20+ million per year.”
Fowler added that the 49ers don’t really want to trade Samuel. If they can, they’ll work something out to make sure he stays in the Bay Area for a long time.
However, there’s a chance Samuel refuses to play for the 49ers. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Samuel told the 49ers to not even bother making a long-term contract offer.
“From my understanding Deebo Samuel basically told the 49ers I want to be traded, don’t make an offer,” Rapoport said on The Pat McAfee Show. “When people say ‘It’s probably about the money.’ I don’t think this is. If he had an offer of $25 million a year, might it have made it more difficult to start this whole thing? Yeah, he’d have a lot more to think about. But they didn’t.”
Of course, this situation can change at any given moment – especially if the 49ers make a generous offer.
Make no mistake though, there are plenty of teams interested in acquiring Samuel.
