ESPN: Chargers Named Trade Fit for Disgruntled First Rounder

May 21, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Many people within ESPN believe the Los Angeles Chargers could target cornerback Jaire Alexander in a possible trade before the 2025 regular season. According to the source, they think Alexander’s landing in Los Angeles could be what saves this entire pass secondary. Last season, the team was on the right foot with one of the best secondaries, but they lost Kristian Fulton to the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason since he no longer fit the bill. Meanwhile, the Chargers made up for it, signing Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste in free agency.

While both of these athletes are capable of stopping the opposing offenses’ passing game, they could use another cornerback. 2024 draft pick Cam Hart isn’t ready for full-time duties, and being that Alexander is a veteran, he could fit the mold of what Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is looking for. Originally selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Louisville product has been one of the NFL players with the spotlight on them of being a possible trade candidate. After a lot of speculation about the Packers trying to trade him, they couldn’t find a team that would want to take him in exchange for a deal.

It shouldn’t be surprising since no team would be willing to risk any draft picks or their cap space for Alexander. Luckily, the Chargers have both, but these four other teams may pursue the cornerback if he’s still available in the upcoming months.

ESPN: Chargers Named Trade Fit for Disgruntled First Rounder Jaire Alexander – 4 Other Teams Could Intervene

Possible Destinations

Dallas Cowboys

Despite trading for Kaiir Elam this offseason for depth, they could target another cornerback. Alexander doesn’t need to start for the Cowboys, but if Trevon Diggs or DaRon Bland can’t stay consistent, there are a lot of questions about their future. Especially for Bland, who is entering the final year of his current contract. While they did draft Shavon Revel Jr. this year, he has injury issues, and they could take a chance on Alexander to provide some relief.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, it’s going to be another interesting 2025 regular season for the Baltimore Ravens’ secondary. After losing Ar’Darius Washington to a gruesome injury this offseason, they’re hoping 2025 draft pick Malaki Starks can step up. However, they signed Chidobe Awuzie to potentially help Marlon Humphrey alongside him, but he’s too inconsistent. Alexander has experience and ball skills; as long as he can stay healthy, he can ball out for Baltimore.

New Orleans Saints

This is the most logical destination for Alexander since the Saints are in dire need of a cornerback. It might be hard to pull off the trade given the organization’s cap space. However, being that general Mickey Loomis figured out how to sign Justin Reid, they could do the same with Alexander. Alontae Taylor won’t be on the same level as Kool-Aid McKinstry, so having Alexander in the same room would bolster this unit.

Carolina Panthers

It’s been a phenomenal offseason for the Carolina Panthers in terms of adding talent to their secondary unit. They re-signed Michael Jackson and Jaycee Horn as their lockdown corners, but they could use the depth. Jackson still has less experience, so they could trade for Alexander to be a mentor for this unit.
