Did the Packers Miss Out on Travis Fulgham?

October 12, 2020 by Packers Talk Leave a Comment

In an unexpected performance on Sunday, former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Travis Fulgham had a breakout game for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fulgham hauled in 10 catches for 152 yards and a touchdown filling in on a dilapidated Eagles offense.

For those wondering when the Packers actually had Fulgham on their roster, it’s an excusable offense. Green Bay signed the 2019 sixth-rounder the day after he was released by the Detroit Lions. Fulgham’s stint with the Packers was short-lived as he was waived just nine days later.

It’s easy to see why Green Bay initially wanted to take a look at Fulgham. The former Old Dominion walk-on stands at 6-2, ran a 4.58, and logged a 36.5-inch vertical. He fits the mold almost perfectly of what the Packers look for at wide receiver.

This offseason, Green Bay notably chose not to select a wide receiver despite a loaded draft class. Instead, they believed in their guys who were in the process of being groomed for the second year in Matt LaFleur’s offense. In hindsight, it was the right call.

While they decided not to bring in any “big names” to compete at wide receiver, the Packers did add Malik Turner, former CFL standout Reggie Begelton, and Fulgham to compete during training camp. Begelton was the only one of the three to last as he is now a member of the team’s practice squad.

Even with their arguable lack of talent at receiver, there is very little to be discontent about when it comes to the current state of Green Bay’s offense. They are lighting up scoreboards, and Aaron Rodgers is in the running for his third MVP award. However, it’s hard not to wonder how Fulgham may have slipped through the cracks.

If not sign him to the practice squad after training camp, the Packers had the chance to consider bringing back Fulgham after the injury to star wideout Davante Adams. Fulgham was available as a member of Philadelphia’s practice squad had the Eagles not protected him from signing elsewhere.

Then, following the news of Allen Lazard’s core injury, it might have been a good time to target Fulgham again. However, it was too late as he was signed to the Eagles’ active roster the same day.

It appears the Packers can manage without Adams and Lazard, but a guy with Fulgham’s potential definitely would have helped.

We will probably never know if Green Bay ever considered bringing back Fulgham, however, you have to question if the Packers let a good player slip away.
