Details Emerging From Aaron Rodgers’ Agreement With Packers

July 27, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

A closeup of Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

The wait is over. Aaron Rodgers is coming back to Green Bay for the 2021 season, but a few alterations are being made to his contract.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Packers are offering “concessions” in an attempt to get the three-time MVP back in the fold. The two sides are in the process of finalizing “mutually agreed-upon” terms.

Schefter reports that 2023, the final year of Rodgers’ current deal, will be voided, with no franchise or transition tags allowed. The Packers are also willing to “review” Rodgers’ situation after the 2021 season.

“The Packers’ agreement to “review” the situation after the season implies that the team will trade Rodgers if he still feels the way he has about the Packers’ culture and decision-making,” Schefter wrote.

Per @AdamSchefter

Here’s where the Packers/Aaron Rodgers situation is at currently.. seems like all systems go for at least another year.

It will be interesting to find out what the reported “mechanisms” being put in place to appease Rodgers are. At the very least, the Packers are deadly serious about getting their superstar quarterback in the building for this season.

After back-to-back NFC runner-up finishes, Green Bay should still be regarded as one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the NFL, as long as Rodgers plays. The best-case scenario is they win that elusive second Super Bowl title, and maybe Rodgers even wants an extension.

The worst-case outcome would be falling short of a title and having to move on from Rodgers in 2022 without getting any sort of compensation. However, it doesn’t seem like that will happen.

Aaron Rodgers’ 2023 contract year voiding means Packers will trade him next offseason before the NFL Draft or redo his deal before 2022 regular season starts (likely the former). There’s no way Green Bay would let him leave in 2023 for just a 3rd round compensatory pick at best.

If the Packers have to trade the four-time All-Pro next year, they’ll at least recoup some assets in the deal and it will make going “all-in” for 2021 more worthwhile.
