There are conflicting reports on the Green Bay Packers’ interest level in free agent receiver Jarvis Landry.
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Packers are expected to be “in the mix” for Landry, who was released by the Cleveland Browns on Monday. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are also teams “to watch” in pursuing Landry.
However, Josina Anderson of USA TODAY Sports reported the Packers are not expected to be a team interested in Landry, who caught 52 passes for 570 yards and two touchdowns for the Browns.
Now 29, Landry is entering his ninth NFL season looking for his third different team. He was a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2014.
In theory, the Packers could use a slot receiver if veteran Randall Cobb becomes a cap casualty. Landry also has experience returning punts.
While the Packers might have a need at receiver, Landry doesn’t possess the size or skill set to replace a player like Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who is expected to depart in free agency.
If Cobb remains, the Packers would have little use for a player with a redundant style of play. Green Bay also has Amari Rodgers, a third-round pick in the 2021 draft, as an option as the slot/returner combo.
Also, if interest in Landry is high around the league, the Packers don’t have the financial flexibility to get into a bidding war for an older receiver.
