Quiet time – If you write about the Packers, this time of year can be pure torture. There is almost nothing new to write about, last season and the draft has been long put to bed and all the previews and expectations have been done to death. I know from first-hand experience when I was doing all the writing for my own site that It is NOT EASY during this time of year to compose interesting articles that people will actually want to read. To that end, I ask that you show a little extra appreciation for our writers on here during this time – I think they’re doing a great job.
The curious case of Kurt Benkert – It seems like a very odd time (from their perspective) for the Packers to make this move. From all accounts, Danny Etling has done nothing to look like a viable third quarterback and the Packers always carry four quarterbacks in camp. While Benkert himself said he knew he was going to get cut at the end of camp, the Packers will certainly need to have an emergency third quarterback on the practice squad. A guy like Benkert, who knows the system, would have be the obvious choice to be brought back to the practice squad. Perhaps the Packers are confident Benkert will be a street free agent at the start of the season, anyway. For his part, Benkert was appreciative of the opportunity to catch on somewhere else where perhaps a better opportunity awaits. We will have to wait to see how this plays out, but you would have to think a new quarterback will be brought in to replace Benkert before training camp starts
I’m Sorry – I just want to apologize to Rashan Gary for believing the “he’s not a hard worker” untruths that were being reported during his draft season. I didn’t investigate further for myself and that was a mistake. Lesson learned.
Alien Lizard – Nothing against Allen, but I’m just not buying all the “Lizard as the #1 receiver” talk currently going around. I’m predicting a highly motivated Sammy Watkins will re-capture his first-round form and claim that title as the season progresses. This would no doubt make the Watkins signing the steal of the year by Gutenkunst.
1st Round talent on defense – There are seven first-round picks on the Packers defense that figure to be heavy contributors in 2022. Add Preston Smith, an early second-rounder, and that’s a lot of top-shelf talent on one defense. The only thing better would be higher picks, but you would have to give up some playoff appearances to be rewarded with those, so no thank you.
