Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has one of the biggest moves of his career coming up: trading longtime starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Amid reports speculating why talks with the Jets have stalled, he had some interesting comments.
Speaking to the media today, Gutekunst said that despite the reports that the Packers are demanding a first-round pick from the New York Jets as part of a Rodgers trade, he doesn’t necessarily need it in the deal.
Gutekunst also said that there’s no timeline on the Rodgers trade and that the Packers are not opposed to letting him play for the Packers again despite it not trending that way.
NFL fans aren’t convinced that Gutekunst is being honest with his statement about the first-round pick though. Many are saying that if the first-round pick weren’t a sticking point, the deal would be done already.
#Packers GM Brian Gutekunst just met with a small group of media here in Phoenix.
– No timeline on trading Aaron Rodgers, hoping soon
– Doesn’t necessarily need a first-round pick
– Any chance Rodgers plays for GB again? Not trending that way but “all options are on the table”— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 27, 2023
“Why are we still pretending that option is on the table?” one Jets fan replied.
“Packer fans told me they had all the leverage,” another joked.
“If he doesn’t need a RD1 pick, what’s the holdup? Feels like someone is lying,” a third wrote.
Clearly someone is either lying or misinformed or both. But we won’t know for sure until after the trade is finalized.
