Breaking: Packers Weapon Could Be On Trade Block

August 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After only spending two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, the team could trade wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks before the 2025 regular season. It’s easy to see why reports believe the Packers may trade Wicks since the team has a logjam at the pass-catching department. Quarterback Jordan Love needs more consistency in the aerial attack, and given that Jayden Reed, Matthew Golden, Romeo Doubs, Savion Williams and Mecole Hardman could win the starting job, it doesn’t give Wicks or Christian Watson a clear future on this roster. Doubs and Watson have also been the subject of trade rumors, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do in this situation.

What the Packers will likely do is rotate all of their top receivers who are fighting for the 53-man roster spot and let them battle it out during the preseason. This would make things fair, but Wicks is still at a disadvantage either way, as the Packers will likely need to release at least two receivers or trade them away to make room for the final roster. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Virginia product hasn’t been able to put up exciting numbers, recording just 39 receptions for 415 receiving yards and five touchdowns. With that, this should prompt the Packers to start prioritizing which receiver will get the most attention, and it shouldn’t be surprising once these four teams possibly pursue Wicks in a possible trade.

Potential Destinations

Washington Commanders

Even though the Washington Commanders might close out a deal soon with WR1 Terry McLaurin, the future behind him looks shaky. Despite trading for Deebo Samuel, he hasn’t been looking too explosive, so it’s really anyone’s job up for grabs. Between Luke McCaffrey and Michael Gallup, the Commanders could benefit from adding one more young weapon to build chemistry with Jayden Daniels.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints need all of the top weapons to win football games, especially when they have a depleted quarterback situation between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed will only explode if they have a capable quarterback, so it might be smart to get another receiver to help in the aerial attack. Wicks won’t get the start in New Orleans, but he could establish himself as a new generation player with the Saints.

Kansas City Chiefs

However, the Kansas City Chiefs should be searching for a wide receiver until Rashee Rice returns from his impending suspension. Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown will only excel if they have another weapon besides them that can replicate what Patrick Mahomes wants in a receiver. Wicks could be that athlete to steady the receiver core group and win at least the WR3 job once Brown plays out his final year in his contract.

Los Angeles Chargers

For the Los Angeles Chargers, they need someone other than bringing back Keenan Allen. It’s hard to imagine the Chargers want to win if they keep falling back on their old receivers like Mike Williams before retiring. Perhaps, Wicks could build a reliable, powerful group with Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
