Breaking: Falcons Cut Former Packers Second Round Pick – 4 Possible Fits

July 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Since the Atlanta Falcons are embracing a possible rebuild defensively, they have cut cornerback Kevin King before the start of the NFL Preseason. According to the breaking news, the Falcons are moving on without the veteran as they have enough depth behind AJ Terrell and Mike Hughes in the cornerback department. This release was no surprise by any means for a team that is looking to stick with the talent that they have on the roster, and there was realistically no clear path for King to earn a starting opportunity in Atlanta. Instead, the team is probably doing him a favor by releasing him, so he could join a team that lacks secondary depth.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Washington product spent the early part of his career with the Green Bay Packers, hoping to carve out a starting role, but was never consistent or healthy enough to pair with former teammate Jaire Alexander. After announcing his Achilles tear in 2023, he was out of action, which led to the Packers moving on, but he got a new opportunity with the Falcons. The team never took him seriously after releasing him and signing him to the practice squad, so while King isn’t the most exciting player, he could be enough as a viable backup for these teams.

Best Possible Next Teams

Baltimore Ravens

Nobody loves upgrading the secondary department more than the Baltimore Ravens. After investing in Chidobe Awuzie and Jaire Alexander this offseason, the Ravens might have one of the most powerful units in football behind 2024 draft pick Nate Wiggins and veteran Marlon Humphrey. However, they could use a hand from King if Awuzie fails to meet expectations as backup, since he hasn’t been the most productive as a defensive threat.

Los Angeles Chargers

Just like the Ravens, the Los Angeles Chargers have also been improving their secondary despite losing Kristian Fulton to the Kansas City Chiefs. For a team that wants to win football games with an old-school defense, all of the attention has been on the pass secondary, so they might build on what they have after acquiring Donte Jackson and Benjamin St-Juste this offseason. King is no starter by any means, but he could benefit from learning behind Jesse Minter’s mindset and turn into a capable threat to help mentor 2024 draft pick Cam Hart.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys always love to take a chance on average players on cheap contracts, and the Robert Rochell signing is an example of that this offseason. Jerry Jones is not happy with Trevon Diggs and with DaRon Bland on the hot seat as well; it’s anyone’s starting role up for grabs in the cornerback department. Even though they got Kaiir Elam in a trade, King could join the Cowboys as a safety net and serve the position that Jourdan Lewis was supposed to before leaving for the Jaguars.

Washington Commanders

Despite the Washington Commanders upgrading their defensive pass-rush, finally, since signing Von Miller, they can’t ignore improving the secondary. The Commanders invested in Jonathan Jones and are bringing back Marshon Lattimore for another season, but they’re lacking depth. King won’t bring Washington to a Super Bowl, but he could be a solid rotational secondary piece to help Lattimore and Jones.
