Analyst Ranks the Packers as a Top Five Team of 2024

February 21, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 in the 2024 NFL regular season, a record that eight other teams in the league either achieved or eclipsed. The Packers failed to finish in the top half of their division and lost their last three games, including a first-round exit from the playoffs. Despite all of this, one NFL analyst suggests the Packers are a much better team than their record and end-of-year performance entails. This NFL analyst suggests that the Packers rank among the top-tier teams in the league.

Notable Packers Rankings

While results were not quite what Titletown was hoping for in terms of a championship, the Packers were one of the top four football teams in football according to Ryan McGrane, an NFL analyst and developer of the RANY statistic. The RANY statistic combines individual or team stats together into one metric to measure performance compared to the average player or team.

Green Bay Packers Rank 4th Overall

McGrane used the RANY statistic to analyze the performance of offenses and defenses of each team and assign them a power rating. Green Bay ranked fourth overall behind the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills with a rating of +1.88 which showed they boasted a good offense and good defense in 2024.

Total Season RANY Power Rankings: The best team in the NFL was the Philadelphia Eagles with a RANY Power Rating of +3.64

Top 5 teams in the NFL:
1. Philadelphia Eagles: +3.64
2. Baltimore Ravens: +3.54
3. Buffalo Bills: +3.00
4. Green Bay Packers: +1.88
5. Denver Broncos: +1.38 pic.twitter.com/tMTZTipOWJ

Green Bay Packers Rank 5th on Defense

The RANY statistics that McGrane uses also show that Green Bay had one of the top defenses in the league, posting solid rankings against the run and pass. The Eagles, Texans, Broncos, and Vikings all rank ahead of the Packers overall. Green Bay has the third-best metric against the run and the sixth-best metric against the pass.

The NFL’s Most Valuable Defense for the full 2024 season was the Philadelphia Eagles with a RANY per play of +1.58

Top 5 most valuable defenses:
1. Philadelphia Eagles: +1.58
2. Houston Texans: +1.15
3. Denver Broncos: +1.05
4. Minnesota Vikings: +0.99

While the Packers do have many weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball, there is no doubt that their performance was one of a kind for the former half of the season. As players started to undergo injuries and miss time, many players had to step up and fill the roles of guys like Jaire Alexander and Quay Walker. A healthy Packers defense is a scary sight and additions to the cornerback and edge rushing positions in the 2025 NFL Draft and free agency could be the recipe for a dominant year in 2025.

Green Bay Packers Rank Top Ten At Quarterback

While there is no known metric released on how the Packers offense as a whole ranks against the league, Jordan Love is among the top 10 in adding value through passing and rushing. He is seventh among quarterbacks in adding value to the offense through his passes and is ranked 11% higher than the average quarterback in the NFL.

Love’s receivers struggle all year with drops and this statistic could be much higher if the Packers address the wide receiver position before September rolls around. Love also faced numerous injuries that kept him sidelined and from reaching his potential for the season.

Full 2024 NFL Season: Lamar Jackson was the best player with a RANY of +2053.2; +59.2% better than the avg QB.

Top 5 QBs in 2024:
1. Lamar: +2053.2; +59.2%
2. Josh Allen: +1743.4; +50.3%
3. Jalen Hurts: +1127.3; +32.5%
4. Jared Goff: +846.2; +24.4%
5. Brock Purdy: +777.5; +22.4% pic.twitter.com/EZRi3c4DNj

Packers Rank In 2025

The Packers have a real chance to improve upon these numbers. If they can address their weaknesses in the draft and free agency. While the statistics may show that they are capable of performing and competing for a Super Bowl title, they need to continue to improve upon the outstanding numbers they are already putting up which translates into wins against good teams.
