The Green Bay Packers are a good football team. They were a decent team in year one of the Jordan Love era, and they were a better team last year. They scored more points, gave up fewer points, and won more games.
Despite all of that there’s been a laundry list of “concerns” about the team this year that seem to continually crop up as we enter the slowest part of the sports calendar. Lets look at a few of those and see if we can’t address them.
The Jordan Love Situation
After finishing the 2023 season on an insane run, expectations were extremely high for Love coming into the 2024 season. What we ended up getting was a mixed bag. But a very explainable one. This has been a topic of discussion for a few months now, but just to reiterate a few important points
Love was probably healthy for maybe half the season. Multiple lower body injuries over an extended period of time would mess with any athletes ability to play consistently, and despite that Love still put up better than average numbers.
No quarterback in the league was plagued by drops like Love was either, particularly on third down. With a bit of better health luck, and even a simple regression to the mean on drops, and Love is fully capable of putting up a top 5 season.
Also worth mentioning:
The Secondary
Please notice I said “secondary” and not “cornerback”. Because there has been a lot of handwringing about the state of the Packers cornerback room post Jaire Alexander while ignoring the other half of the secondary.
First – remember that Alexander played in fewer than half the games last season. This means that the corners Green Bay has on it’s roster right now are the same as the year prior, and Green Bay had a pretty solid defense last year. They also added free agent Nate Hobbs.
Enough about the corners though. Because what I don’t understand is how its being ignored that behind those corners are All-Pro Safety Xavier McKinney, and All-Rookie Safety Evan Williams.
Green Bay may not have the best corners, but what they have are serviceable ones, backed by one of the best safety duos in the entire league. So you’ll forgive me if I don’t buy into the idea that the Packers pass defense is suddenly garbage because they lost a guy that doesn’t play.
The Drops
We talked about it at the top, but its worth mentioning again.
This is not good. But the good news is that it likely won’t repeat. If the Packers pass catchers simply regress back towards the mean this offense becomes an entirely different monster.
Jayden Reed as a rookie had some of the best hands on the team. That fell off in a big way in his second season, but those numbers probably at worst level out.
Tucker Kraft should be a bigger focal point this season.
Matthew Golden displayed great hands in his final season before going pro.
The Packers will drop fewer passes this year, and combined with a healthy Love this offense will be in the running for a top five unit next season.
