While long assumed the deal would get done, it’s great to see the notification appear, and the news official. Allen Lazard has signed his RFA Tender with the Green Bay Packers.
With the departure of Davante Adams and MVS, the talk has long been that Lazard would be the top pass catcher in Green Bay in 2022. It flew a bit under the radar that he was yet to officially ink a deal for the upcoming season with the Pack. When minicamp started last week and there was no #13, concerns started to rise. Those concerns can now be put to rest.
The numbers for Lazard don’t jump off the page. He’s never caught more than 40 balls in a season. He’s never eclipsed more than 515 yards in a full year. But he’s coming off a season with 8 TD receptions, he has the size, and he has the back-to-back MVP throwing the ball to him. The opportunity for him to have a breakout season is there.
The offense in 2022 is going to be very different than Packers fans are used to in the Rodgers era. There has nearly always been a top tier receiving option from Donald Driver, to Greg Jennings, to Jordy Nelson, and then Davante Adams. Allen Lazard is not going to be that elite receiving option these previous names have been. But they don’t need him to be. He needs to be Allen Lazard. The creativity of Matt LaFleur will get the most out of Lazard, Aaron Jones, AJ Dillion, Christian Watson, Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, and more. While this wasn’t a move that will make noise around the NFL, it’s one Packers fans should be excited about.
