Aaron Rodgers Asked If He Still Wants To Be A Green Bay Packer

On his second day back with the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers gave one of the most revealing press conferences we’ve seen in a long time. An obvious theme: his future with the Green Bay Packers beyond this season.

The Packers acquiesced enough to Rodgers to get him to return for training camp this week, in anticipation of the 2021 season. The team has reportedly altered his contract to where he can walk in 2023. Many believe this will be his last year with the Packers, however, if the team can get a major trade haul for him, and move on to Jordan Love.

Nothing is predetermined, of course. If Rodgers plays at an MVP level again in 2021, and the Packers continue to knock on the door of the Super Bowl, it will be very hard to move on from him. He’s not guaranteeing that he won’t retire as a Packer, either.

When asked if he wants to be a Green Bay Packer at this point, Rodgers said yes. “I do. I love my teammates, I love the city, I love my coaches,” he told reporters at today’s presser.

Rodgers was pretty frank about what happened this offseason, and what led to the fracture between he and the front office. “I just want to be involved in conversations that affect my ability to do my job,” citing instances where players were released that he didn’t agree with.

He said he’s not sure if enough has changed for him in the long term. The current deal for Randall Cobb, which is expected to be finalized soon, has Rodgers’ fingerprints all over it though.

While he praised Green Bay as a city, he was also pretty honest about the challenges that the Packers have to draw talent.

“I think we can all understand Green Bay isn’t a huge vacation destination,” Rodgers said. “People are coming here to play with me, to play with our team, and knowing that they can win a championship here.”

This season, Rodgers will do something that neither Bart Starr nor Brett Favre pulled off, and play his 17th season in Green Bay. There are still clear long term issues between Aaron Rodgers and the Packers front office, but getting him back for 2021 was the immediate concern, and they’ve done that. We’ll see where things progress from here.
