Of all the “controversies” Aaron Rodgers has been involved in over the last year, the one regarding his postgame hug of Erin Andrews might be the least consequential.
Rodgers and Andrews briefly hugged following a three-minute on-field interview after the Packers’ win over the Cleveland Browns on Christmas Day. The pair had conducted the interview while social distancing.
Some people on social media criticized Rodgers and Andrews for hugging while being unmasked, particularly because Rodgers has famously not been vaccinated against COVID-19. However, the quarterback downplayed the whole encounter during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” yesterday.
“Look, I’ve known EA for a long time and I think the whole thing is obviously a little bit strange. You’ve got to do some sort of 8-feet-apart interview,” Rodgers said.
“And that’s my friend. That’s the same way I’d hug a friend seeing them on the field, or hug a guy on the opposing team that you have respect for and you play against. Look, I do what I’m told in those situations about keeping distance, but I’m a hugger and I enjoy seeing my friends postgame.”

Rodgers broke Brett Favre’s record for career touchdown passes in a Packer uniform during that win over Cleveland. Last week, he led Green Bay to a win over the Minnesota Vikings, clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC in the process.
The Packers will close out the 2021 regular season against the Detroit Lions this Sunday.
