A Look Around the League: Checking in on Some Former Packers

September 4, 2025 by Packers Talk

In the NFL, the only constant is change. Rosters are constantly changing. Players come and go frequently. The Packers churn over their roster and practice squad as much as anyone. Some players will be remembered forever. Other players were barely ever known. Every fan has that training camp darling who was surprisingly cut or a favorite player who moved on.

It can be difficult to keep track of all of the players once they leave the Packers. That’s what this article is for. In this piece, there’s an update on each player who spent time with the Packers over recent years. Not every player has a new team, and some are already out of the league. There are, however, many players who have stuck around the NFL longer than one might have thought.

Everyone knows about guys like Aaron Rodgers and Jaire Alexander – two fan favorites who have found new homes. But this piece goes deeper than that. Get ready to see some names that are a blast from the past. There might even be a few names that make you go, “Who?”

Arizona Cardinals

Josiah Deguara (practice squad) was a member of the Packers from 2020 to 2023. During his time with the Packers, Deguara logged over 500 special teams snaps in just three seasons. He was used more as an H-back than a tight end. After leaving Green Bay, Deguara signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he was primarily a special teams-only player. He is now a member of the Cardinals’ practice squad.

Atlanta Falcons

Chris Blair (practice squad) spent training camp in 2021 with the Packers and then the 2021 season on the Packers’ practice squad. After a stint in the XFL, Blair joined the Falcons in 2023 as a member of their practice squad. He has been on their practice squad each of the last three seasons.

Baltimore Ravens

Jaire Alexander was one of the main faces of the Packers’ defense from 2018 to 2024. The former first-round pick was named to two Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams during his time in Green Bay. Unfortunately, injuries caused him to miss a lot of time, which frustrated the Packers’ front office. He also got himself in some trouble with the team for his off-the-field antics. The Packers ultimately decided to move on and released him. Alexander quickly signed with the Ravens to join his college teammate and friend, Lamar Jackson. The Ravens are counting on Alexander to have a bounce-back season, but he is still battling a knee issue that is “something he’s been dealing with for a few years.” He had his knee drained in July. Alexander hadn’t practiced since August 9, but he was able to return yesterday.

Jaire Alexander back at #Ravens practice today for the first time since Aug. 9. Certainly was in good spirits as he swagged his way onto the field, was moving well and did not appear to have any kind of brace or wrap on his knee #RavensFlock pic.twitter.com/1Fg144QDOC

Carolina Panthers

JJ Jansen was a member of the Green Bay Packers in 2008, although he spent the entire season on injured reserve. The next offseason, the Packers traded him to the Caroline Panthers. He has been the long snapper for the Panthers since 2009. He was named to the 2013 Pro Bowl. Jansen has carved out quite a career for himself.

David Moore spent a few months with the Packers during the 2021 season. The Packers signed him to their practice squad in December of 2021, and then they elevated him for one regular-season game. He returned three punts for 33 yards against the Minnesota Vikings. That was the end of his Packers’ tenure. Since leaving the Packers, he’s spent time with the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Carolina Panthers.

Yosh Nijman played for the Packers from 2019 to 2023 after signing as a rookie undrafted free agent. Over his four-year Packers’ tenure, he started 22 games as the primary backup swing-tackle. The Packers let Nijman hit free agency in 2024, and he signed a two-year contract with the Panthers. He started three games for the Panthers last season and should serve as the team’s top backup tackle again this season.

Krys Barnes (practice squad) was with the Packers from 2020 to 2022. The Packers first signed Barnes as a rookie undrafted free agent before the 2020 season. He went on to start 24 games for the Packers over the next three seasons. After the 2022 season, Barnes signed with the Arizona Cardinals and played in 16 games. He is now a member of the Panthers’ practice squad.

Kalen King (practice squad) was a member of the Packers’ practice squad in 2024 and then was in a fierce competition throughout the 2025 preseason for one of the final roster spots. The Packers ultimately kept Kamal Hadden over King. Rather than sticking around on the Packers’ practice squad for another season, King chose to join the Panthers’ practice squad, where he might have a better opportunity to join the active roster.

Chicago Bears

Jonathan Owens signed a one-year deal with the Packers before the 2023 season. He ended up playing in all 17 games that season, starting 11 games. He played 775 defensive snaps and 233 special teams snaps. The Packers wanted to overhaul their safety position, so they let Owens explore the free agent market and instead signed Xavier McKinney. Owens then signed with the Chicago Bears. In his first season with the Bears, he played in all 17 games, starting five. He is in the second year of his contract with the Bears.

Jonathan Ford (practice squad) was a seventh-round pick for the Packers in 2022. He stayed with the Packers from 2022 to 2024. Most of his time in Green Bay was spent on the practice squad or inactive. Despite being with the team for three seasons, he never appeared in a game. Chicago signed Ford off of Green Bay’s practice squad late last season, and Ford went on to appear in four games for the Bears. He will start the 2025 season on the Bears’ practice squad.

Cincinnati Bengals

Oren Burks was with the Packers from 2018 to 2021. The former third-round pick only started seven games for the Packers over his four-year tenure. Burks never became much of a contributor on the defensive side of the ball. His time in Green Bay was spent primarily on special teams. He logged 1,175 snaps on special teams with the Packers. Since leaving Green Bay, Burks has carved out a nice career for himself. He spent two years with the San Francisco 49ers and two years with the Philadelphia Eagles. Burks continues to play primarily on special teams, but playing in 108 regular-season games and 15 playoff games over seven seasons is an impressive run for anyone.

Lucas Patrick was a Green Bay Packer from 2016 to 2021. After initially signing as a rookie undrafted free agent, he eventually became a two-year starter for the Packers. He mostly played guard for the Packers, but has been a versatile piece throughout his career. After leaving Green Bay, Patrick spent two years with the Bears, a season with the Saints, and now he joins the Bengals as the expected starting right guard. Patrick played in 78 games for the Packers, 23 for the Bears, and 11 for the Saints. He’s started a total of 67 games in his career. At age 32, he’s still a capable offensive lineman.

Mike Pennel signed with the Packers as a rookie undrafted free agent in 2014. He played three seasons in Green Bay.  He appeared in 37 games during his three seasons, only recording one sack and 40 tackles. Pennel wasn’t known for being much of a pass rusher, but he held up well against the run. Pennell has created a solid career for himself since leaving Green Bay, most notably winning two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs. After not making the Chiefs roster this season, Pennell signed on with the Bengals’ practice squad.

T.J. Slaton Jr. was a fifth-round pick for the Packers in 2021. He went on to play four seasons with the team before departing for the Bengals in free agency earlier this year. As a Packer, he never missed a game, playing in all 72 of a possible 72 games. At 6’5”, 340 lbs, Slaton grew into a very strong run-defender. He is expected to be one of the starting defensive tackles for the Bengals this season. Slaton will likely play a very similar role to the role he played in Green Bay.

Cleveland Browns

Corey Bojorquez was the Packers’ punter for the 2021 season. The Packers traded a 2023 sixth-round pick to acquire Bojorquez. Overall, Bojorquez punted 53 times with a net average of 39.9. He did, however, record an 82-yard punt that season. Bojorquez moved on after one year with the Packers and has been with the Browns ever since. He is getting ready to start his fourth season punting as a Brown.

Sal Cannella (practice squad) might win the award for most obscure Packer on this list. He was with the Packers for the 2022 training camp, but never made the active roster. He played for four seasons in the XFL, yet keeps getting opportunities to join NFL training camps. Cannella has joined five different NFL teams, but has never played in a game. Cannella is currently on the Browns’ practice squad.

Dallas Cowboys

Kenny Clark wasn’t expected to be on this list a week ago, but here we are. Last Thursday, the Packers traded Clark to Dallas as part of the blockbuster Micah Parsons deal. Clark played nine seasons with the Packers (2016-2024). He was named to three Pro Bowls during his time in Green Bay. He was one of the best, but quietest, leaders of the Packers for several years. Clark will undoubtedly be a Packers’ Hall of Famer. Both Brian Gutekunst and Jerry Jones acknowledged that the Parsons trade wouldn’t have happened without Kenny Clark being involved. Dallas clearly covets Clark, and they are expecting him to bounce back and solve their run-game woes.

New #Cowboys DT Kenny Clark said Jerry Jones met with him with the message the trade wasn’t happening without him being acquired by Dallas. He said it was reassuring to know he’s wanted. pic.twitter.com/ZBpMhOHOEq

— Ed Werder (@WerderEdNFL) August 29, 2025

The Packers signed Robert Rochell (practice squad) off the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad in 2023. He spent the rest of the 2023 and 2024 seasons with Green Bay. He played in 20 games with the Packers, logging 233 special teams snaps. After a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, Rochell signed on with the Dallas Cowboys, ultimately earning a spot on their practice squad.

Indianapolis Colts

Tyler Goodson signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent before the 2022 season. He spent the entire 2022 season on the Packers’ practice squad. He returned for training camp with the Packers in 2023, but he was eventually released when the Packers opted to keep Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, and Emanuel Wilson. Goodson then signed onto the Colts’ practice squad before eventually joining their active roster. He’s been with the Colts ever since. In 22 regular-season games, Goodson has run the ball 45 times with 5.3 yards per attempt. He has settled in nicely to a role of backing up Jonathan Taylor and getting some occasional third-down work.

Luke Tenuta was with the Packers around the same time as Goodson. The Packers claimed him off waivers during the 2022 season. He spent the 2023 season on the Packers’ injured reserve. He went through training camp with Green Bay in 2024, but ultimately was released. After spending the 2024 season on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, Tenuta signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts for the 2025 season and made the 53-man roster after a decent training camp. He’s expected to serve as one of the backup offensive linemen for the Colts.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Darnell Savage was drafted 21st overall by the Packers in 2019. The Packers had high hopes for Savage after years of disappointing safety play, but unfortunately, Savage didn’t live up to expectations. Over his five-year tenure with the Packers, Savage played in 72 games, intercepted 9 passes, and recorded 302 tackles. He played 4,156 defensive snaps and 319 special teams snaps. His career in Green Bay wasn’t a total failure; he just wasn’t the savior the Packers were looking for. After his contract expired, the Packers chose to let him walk in free agency. Savage signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He began the 2024 season as a starter for the Jaguars, but missed time due to injury. Now in 2025, Savage is expected to start the season as a backup.

The Packers drafted Cole Van Lanen in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. He spent the 2021 season on the Packers’ practice squad. The following summer, the Packers traded Van Lanen to the Jaguars at the end of training camp for a seventh-round pick. Van Lanen has had a solid career with the Jaguars. He’s made the team in each of the last three seasons, appearing in 34 games and starting three. The Jaguars re-signed Van Lanen for the 2025 season. He’s expected to be one of the backups at offensive tackle.

Kansas City Chiefs

Robert Tonyan (practice squad) spent the majority of his career with the Packers. He was with the team from 2017 to 2022. After starting on the Packers’ practice squad, he kept showing the Packers (and Aaron Rodgers) enough reason to keep him around. His “breakout” season came in 2020. He caught 52 passes for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. After that strong season, there was a lot of hope Tonyan would progress, but the 2020 season was seemingly an outlier. The Packers let Tonyan walk after the 2022 season. Since then, he’s spent time with the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, and now the Kansas City Chiefs. He will start the season on the Chiefs’ practice squad in what might be his last chance in the NFL.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Packers claimed Kyu Blu Kelly during the 2023 season. He spent about a month with the team before being released. He played in one game during his time with the Packers. Since leaving the Packers, he joined the Washington Commanders for a short stint and now the Las Vegas Raiders. Kelly started on the Raiders’ practice squad, but after a strong training camp, he will start the 2025 season on the active roster.

Eric Stokes, who was with the Packers from 2021 to 2024, had a disappointing tenure with the Packers. The Packers took him with their first-round pick during the 2021 draft. His first season was very promising, but injuries derailed his career. He only played in 12 of a possible 34 regular-season games the next two seasons. He went from being an encouraging rookie to a veteran liability in a short amount of time. The Packers showed no interest in bringing him back, so Stokes signed with the Raiders and is expected to be one of the starting cornerbacks in 2025.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Packers decided to use a fifth-round draft pick on punter JK Scott during the 2018 draft. He stayed with the Packers from 2018 until 2020. After three disappointing seasons, the Packers decided to move on before the 2021 season. The Chargers eventually came along and gave Scott his second chance, and he’s taken advantage. The weather always seemed to plague Scott during his time in Green Bay, but now the Chargers play a majority of their games indoors. That has been a great help to Scott. His yards per punt and net yards per punt have both increased. Releasing Scott was a blessing in disguise for both the Packers and Scott.

Long snapper Rick Lovato is another blast from the past. Lovato played two games for the Packers at the end of the 2015 season when Brett Goode suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Packers moved on from Lovato after Goode was healthy again. After a pit stop with the Washington Commanders, Lovato signed on with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played nine seasons, was named to a Pro Bowl, and won two Super Bowls. Now, Lovato signed on with the Chargers’ practice squad. The Chargers’ regular long snapper, Josh Harris, is on Reserve/Injured; Designated for Return, so Lovato will likely fill in until Harris is healthy. Regardless, Lovato has created a pretty strong career for himself.

Amar Johnson (practice squad) signed with the Packers as a rookie undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL draft. He went through training camp with the team, and despite a strong preseason, he was ultimately released. He recently signed with the Chargers’ practice squad.

Los Angeles Rams

Davante Adams spent eight seasons with the Packers from 2014 to 2021. He will go down as one of the greatest wide receivers to wear the green and gold. During his Packers tenure, he played 116 games, caught 669 passes, accumulated 8,121 receiving yards, and scored 73 touchdowns. He earned six Pro Bowl nods and was named a First-Team All-Pro three times. After a contract dispute between Adams and the Packers during the 2022 offseason, they chose to trade him to the Raiders. Since leaving the Packers, Adams has had some frustrating stints with both the Raiders and Jets. Now a member of the Rams, Adams will look to show he’s still got it.

Miami Dolphins

Rasul Douglas played for the Packers from 2021 to 2023. After a shaky start to his career, the Packers took a flier on Douglas and signed him off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad. It didn’t take long for Douglas to make his mark. Douglas played some of the best ball of his career in Green Bay. He played in 36 games, recording 10 interceptions. He quickly became one of the leaders on defense. The Packers traded Douglas to the Buffalo Bills during the 2023 season before the trade deadline. After a decent start to his Bills’ career, Douglas’ play gradually started to decline. The Bills chose not to re-sign him, and he went unsigned until recently signing with the Miami Dolphins last week. Douglas may have a chance to start for the Dolphins.

Minnesota Vikings

The Packers drafted Aaron Jones Sr. in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He stayed with the team for the next seven seasons and was beloved by both the locker room and fans. As a Packer, he rushed for over 1,000 yards three times and was named to one Pro Bowl. He led the league in rushing touchdowns one season as well. The Packers chose to sign Josh Jacobs, which led to Jones being released. Jones then signed with the Minnesota Vikings and had a strong season. The Vikings will be relying on Jones to produce a second strong season this year.

Eric Wilson began his career with the Vikings, spent some time with the Packers, and is now back with the Vikings again. Wilson was a Packer from 2022 to 2024, spending most of his time as a core special teamer. He logged 826 snaps on special teams over his three years with the team. Wilson will slot into a similar role with the Vikings.

New England Patriots

Corey Ballentine (practice squad) was with the Packers for three seasons, spanning from 2022 to 2024. He played in 37 games, logging 581 defensive snaps and 415 special teams snaps. He was never a starter, but he was a solid fill-in cornerback and willing contributor on special teams. The Packers let Ballentine sign with the Colts in free agency after the 2024 season, but the Colts released him early on in training camp, so the Packers brought him back for the remainder of the 2025 camp. He was ultimately released, leading him to sign with the New England Patriots’ practice squad.

New Orleans Saints

The Packers acquired Isaac Yiadom via trade during the 2021 training camp. He went on to play in all 16 games for the Packers that season, but his Packers tenure ended there. With the Packers, he was primarily a special teams player. Since leaving the Packers, Yiadom has bounced around to the Texans, 49ers, and Saints. He continues to get opportunities despite never being very good. Yiadom will have a chance to start for the Saints this season.

New York Giants

Jon Runyan never missed a game for the Packers from 2020 to 2023. After spending his rookie campaign as a backup, Runyan started 50 games over the next three seasons. He turned this production into a three-year, $30 million contract with the Giants. He started 13 games a season ago and will head into the 2025 season as the starting left guard.

Greg Van Roten started his career with the Packers in 2012. He stayed with the team for two seasons, playing a total of ten games. Once he left Green Bay, he was out of the NFL for several years. He got his chance to return in 2017 with the Carolina Panthers. Since coming back to the NFL, Van Roten has played in 117 games, starting 88 of them. He’s expected to be the starting right guard for the Giants once again this season. Not a bad career for someone who spent 3 years out of the NFL.

New York Jets

Andrew Beck played a whopping three games for the Packers during the 2024 season. He played 15 offensive snaps and 17 special teams snaps. The Packers kept him on their practice squad and elevated him for the three games. They didn’t have any interest in keeping him around for more. Beck played most of his career with the Denver Broncos. He is now back on a 53-man roster with the Jets, where he will fill the fullback role.

Surprisingly, Allen Lazard is still with the Jets even though Aaron Rodgers is not. Lazard was in Green Bay for five seasons. He played 57 games for the Packers. He never recorded major receiving numbers, but his blocking and trustworthiness kept him on the field. Once Rodgers was traded to the Jets, Lazard quickly followed. He has played 26 games for the Jets, starting 22 of them. He should start for the Jets again this season.

Josh Myers was the Packers’ starting center from 2021 to 2024. The Packers drafted him in the second round of the 2021 draft, and he was a starter from day one. He started all 56 games that he was healthy enough to play in, although his play always left people wanting more. The Packers let him walk in free agency,

Marquis Hayes (practice squad) is a name many Packer fans won’t recognize. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Packers toward the end of the 2024 season, but was released during the 2025 OTAs. He never played in a game for Green Bay and never even saw time on the active roster. Hayes will start the 2025 season on the New York Jets practice squad.

Philadelphia Eagles

A.J. Dillon first joined the Packers during the 2020 season after being selected in the second round of the NFL draft. He played in 60 games for the Packers over the next four seasons, but often in a backup role. He finished his Packers’ career rushing 597 times for 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns. Dillon’s career yards per carry was 4.1. The Packers brought Dillon back in 2024, but he spent the season on the reserve/injured list due to a neck injury. That was the end of his time with the Packers. Back in March, Dillon joined the Philadelphia Eagles, where he will be expected to be one of the backup running backs for Saquon Barkley.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Not much needs to be said about Aaron Rodgers and his time with the Packers. He was the starting quarterback for 15 seasons, won four MVP awards, and led the Packers to a Super Bowl victory. He’s one of the best of all time, and definitely amongst the best the Packers have ever had. During the 2023 offseason, it was time for Rodgers and the Packers to move on from one another. The Packers traded him to the Jets, which was an interesting situation in and of itself. After two years with the Jets, Rodgers became a free agent and eventually signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It remains to be seen if he still has anything left in the tank at age 41, but he will be one of the captains and starters for the Steelers this season.

Dean Lowry (reserve/injured) started his NFL career with the Packers back in 2016. He stayed with the team through the 2022 season. As a Packer, he played in 111 games and was one of the more consistent and reliable pieces along the Packers’ defensive line. He was never a game-changer or disruptive up front, but he did his job week in and week out. Once he hit free agency, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings. After one season, the Vikings moved on, so Lowry then signed with the Steelers. Unfortunately, Lowry will spend the 2025 season on the reserve/injured list due to an ACL injury.

Lew Nichols (practice squad) was a seventh-round draft pick for the Packers back in 2023, but he never saw any time on the Packers’ active roster. The Packers waived him injured after the 2023 training camp. He then spent some time on the Eagles’ practice squad last season. Now Nichols joins the Steelers’ practice squad after spending training camp in Pittsburgh.

San Francisco 49ers

Patrick Taylor Jr. (reserve/injured) was with the Packers for parts of 2020-2023, mostly as a backup running back and core special teamer. He appeared in 34 games for the Packers, logging about as many snaps on special teams as he did on offense. He bounced between the practice squad and the active roster. After leaving Green Bay, he signed on with the 49ers as a backup running back. He suffered a shoulder injury during training camp that will require surgery, and he will miss the 2025 season.

The Packers’ former fifth-round pick has found his niche in the NFL. Marquez Valdes-Scantling (practice squad) started his career with the Packers in 2018 and remained with the team until 2021. He played in 59 games with the Packers over the span of four seasons. His best asset was his deep speed. Valdes-Scantling could take the top off of the defense with the best of them. Unfortunately, he’s probably best remembered for his 15 drops, some of them being in crucial points of games. Since leaving Green Bay, he has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and now the San Francisco 49ers. He has the highest yards per reception of all active players. It remains to be seen if he’ll see any opportunities to play in San Francisco, but his speed is something every team can use.

Seattle Seahawks

Of the nine seasons Jarran Reed has been in the NFL, seven of them have come with the Seattle Seahawks. In between Seattle stints, Reed spent a year with the Packers. He played in all 17 games of the 2022 season, starting 14 of them. He totaled 52 tackles that season, which was the second-highest total of his career. Despite a solid season in Green Bay, Reed returned to Seattle in 2023 and has been there since. He will likely start along the Seahawks’ defensive line once again.
