Men’s Basketball: Wisconsin lands third transfer portal commitment, Nick Boyd set to join Badgers

April 7, 2025 by The Badger Herald

The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team made its third transfer portal addition of the offseason Sunday. San Diego State point guard Nick Boyd will join the Badgers for a graduate season, he announced over social media on Sunday.

The Garnerville, New York, native is coming off a season where he averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists, which helped lead San Diego State to the NCAA Tournament.

Boyd played his first three years at Florida Atlantic, making consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Notably, he averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in the 2022-23 season, where the Owls made a run to the Final Four.

Boyd’s arrival immediately fills a position of need for the Badgers. The addition gives Wisconsin a true point guard to pair in the backcourt with now-junior John Blackwell. With Kamari McGee graduating, along with Daniel Freitag and Camern Hunter departing via the transfer portal, the Badgers were in desperate need of a point guard, and they got one.

Daniel Freitag entered the transfer portal following the 2024-25 season.

Boyd reportedly visited North Carolina, among other schools. In the NIL era, it is not common for a school like Wisconsin to win a recruiting battle over a blue blood program like North Carolina, making this a big-time addition for Greg Gard and his staff.

The Badgers will hope Boyd’s tournament experience can help the team compete for a Big Ten championship and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Following the commitments of Andrew Rohde and Austin Rapp, Boyd becomes the Badgers’ third addition via the portal. As portal season heats up and names continue to come off the board, Badger fans can relax knowing Gard has landed three players capable of starting in holes left by this year’s senior class.
