Badgers coach on transfer: ‘He’s probably the fastest guy we’ve had in a long time with the ball’

Wisconsin has a dynamic point guard at the helm in 2025.

The Wisconsin Badgers had five additions in the transfer portal this offseason, but none were more exciting than getting San Diego State transfer Nick Boyd.

Boyd is expected to take over the starting point guard role for the Badgers, complementing star John Blackwell in the backcourt.

He had his best season in 2024, averaging 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while running the show at San Diego State. That followed three seasons at FAU, where Boyd was a part of the miraculous Final Four run back in 2023.

Now, he’ll look to be a key player for the Badgers in 2025, and he’s already impressing the coaching staff in summer workouts.

“He’s an exciting player in so many ways with the ball in his hands,” assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft said of Boyd on The Swing Podcast. “He’s probably the fastest guy we’ve had in a long time with the ball, and that’s going to be exciting for our fans to watch, and he’ll have the Kohl Center [rocking] going up and down the court faster than maybe we’ve ever seen, which is fun.

“But, he’s been well-schooled under both Dusty May at FAU and Coach Butch (Brian Dutcher) at San Diego State. So, he understands how to win and what it looks like.”

Wisconsin quickly identified Boyd as a target in the transfer portal, having scouted him throughout the season, and they were able to secure a commitment from the point guard after getting him in for an official visit.

The Badgers have been very particular about the culture they’ve wanted to build, and Boyd’s mentality fit right into their desires at the point guard position.

Wisconsin has a much different team in 2025, but Boyd’s success will be key for them to reach the heights they’ve set this season.
