Six Golden Eagles brought home medals from the three day competition in Connecticut.
Saturday was a double win for Marquette Golden Eagles sprinter Danny Olsen. Not only did he break the Marquette track & field record in the 400 meters with a time of 46.21 seconds, but that time was also good enough to win the event at the 2025 Big East Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Olsen broke his own record, which he set at 46.46 in the preliminary races on Friday in Connecticut. The previous record to Olsen’s weekend was at 47.13 seconds, and was set waaaaaay back in 1981 by John Rydeski.
That was the only individual championship won by Marquette at the Big East Championships, as the men’s team finished sixth overall with 59 points and the women’s team ended up in seventh with 51 points. However, five more Marquette athletes finished top three and brought home a medal. Sophie Herriot and Gus Kasun got things started on Friday when they finished second in the pole vault and third in the decathlon respectively. Herriot’s medal is MU’s first top three finish in women’s pole vault since 2021, while Kasun had the fifth best decathlon point total in program history.
The medals continued on Saturday, led by Olsen’s title of course. Annika Bynum finished second in the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters, Julia Beck finished third in the 100 meter hurdles at 14.09 seconds, and Aaron Hughes finished third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.58 seconds.
The Big East meet concluded the full team participation portion of the Marquette schedule. The only thing left on the slate for the Golden Eagles is NCAA competition, and that usually requires having a top 48 score in the West Region in order to qualify. I think that means that Bynum will get in for the high jump, and we’ll see if Olsen or Kasun’s marks from the Big East Championships stay north of 48 when it’s time to lock in the qualifying cut off.
