To the surprise of no one, that’s how losing streaks work.
Last week, the day in between when United Soccer Coaches closes the voting for their new poll and the day the poll comes out, Marquette men’s soccer lost a match. That didn’t have an impact on the Golden Eagles falling from #13 to #18 in that poll. That loss to Tulsa is included on this week’s new poll, as is Friday’s 3-0 loss to Northern Illinois. Not included? Yesterday’s double OT loss to Wisconsin, as yet again, Marquette played a match in between when the poll closed and when the poll is released.
Officially, Marquette is 3-2-0 in the eyes of the voters, but they had already dropped while still holding nothing but wins. As you can expect, the voters said “yeah, no thanks” when presented with a MU team with two losses. In the new poll that came out on Tuesday, Marquette is nowhere to be found, not ranked, not even receiving a single solitary vote.
Georgetown is still the #1 team in the land, and is thus the best ranked team on Marquette’s schedule this season. Tulsa bounced from #24 up to #10 thanks to beating Marquette. Seton Hall comes in at #19 this week, up three spots from last week to wrap up the ranked teams on the past and future schedule for the Golden Eagles. Providence is the only team on MU’s slate that comes up in the Receiving Votes department this week, and yes, that’s three Big East teams that certainly look like they’re going to give the Golden Eagles fits this season.
Marquette returns to action this Saturday night when they host Villanova to start off conference action. First kick is set for 7pm Central time at Valley Fields or on FloFC if you can’t make it down to the pitch.
