The Golden Eagles will head to Cleveland for a first round game against #10 New Mexico.

The NCAA announced the field and bracket for the 2025 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday evening, and YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles are in the field of 68 as an at-large selection. It’s the fourth straight appearance for Marquette, all under the direction of head coach Shaka Smart.

This time around, Marquette earned a #7 seed and was placed in the South Region. They will be headed to Cleveland for their first round game which will be on Friday, March 21, and their opponent will be #10 seed New Mexico. The Lobos have a record of 26-7 this season after going 17-3 and winning the Mountain West regular season championship. They are coming off a loss to Boise State in the conference tournament, which snapped a four game winning streak.

We’ll dive more into New Mexico and whether or not head coach Richard Pitino will call his family relations to get a scouting report on the Golden Eagles later in the week, but we have to mention the possible second round opponent here. We would do it anyway, but it is very fascinating that it’s either #2 Michigan State or #15 Bryant. The Michigan State part here is the thing we’re looking at, as #2 Marquette lost to #7 Michigan State in Columbus, Ohio, back in 2023.

Everything echoes, that’s all I’m saying.

Elsewhere in the Big East, St. John’s is the #2 seed in the West Region, facing #15 seed Omaha and their mighty trash can victory celebration. UConn landed as a #8 seed and going to Raleigh to see #9 Oklahoma in the first round. Creighton earned a #9 seed, which got them a first round game against #8 Louisville in Lexington, which sounds like a situation where they should just consider throwing in the towel and not bothering to show up. Xavier squeaked into the field, getting sent to the First Four in Dayton as a #11 seed to face Texas where the winner gets #6 Illinois in Milwaukee.

CBS and TNT Sports will be making the television time and network decisions a little later on this evening, so keep your eyes and ears open, everyone……..
