Vincent Cervantes finished 15th on the individual leaderboard, which is a new program record in that department by two spots.
If you got Marquette men’s golf coach Steve Bailey under some hot lights and hit him with some truth serum, I’m pretty sure he would say that he’s not jump up and down excited about the Golden Eagles going from one-over-par on Day 1 of the NCAA Regionals to +3 to +7 to finish at 11-over-par. That trend line saw Marquette go from tied for the top five spots and thus a spot at the NCAA Championships after Day 1 to slowly drifting down to eighth place out of the 13 teams at Atkins Golf Club in Urbana, Illinois. It also means MU missed the cut for the NCAA Championships by 12 strokes.
HOWEVER, we have to point out that Marquette came into the Urbana Regional as the #8 seed and they matched their seed expectation by finishing eighth. They also matched the best NCAA Regional finish in program history, tying the mark posted by the 2019 team that finished their three rounds in Austin at +28 as a team. “Finished as expected, which is also tied for the best ever” is not exactly a terrible result, even if the pathway there isn’t the most fun one in the world.
+11 is the best scoring regional in Marquette history, which sends us along to the next point. Vincent Cervantes, the 2025 Big East Freshman of the Year, paced the team with a three round total of 210, which was three-under-par. He was the only Golden Eagle under par for three rounds, with Patrick Adler’s +1 going as the second best tournament. -3 was good enough for 15th place on the individual leaderboard, and that means that Cervantes has the best individual finish at Regionals in Marquette history. Max Lyons finished tied for 17th in 2023, and that tied the program record set by Mike Van Sickle in 2007 when MVS qualified for competition as an individual.
The 8th place finish at regionals brings Marquette’s season to an end. All told, it’s one of if not the best season of men’s golf in MU history, and with the Big East Freshman of the Year ending up as Marquette’s leader this week, you’d have to think that the future for the Golden Eagles is pretty bright, too.
