That’s the #8 pick in the second round, and the Marquette guard will head to the Indiana Pacers by way of a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.
Four seasons at Marquette for head men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart, four NBA Draft picks.
With the eighth pick in the second round, the San Antonio Spurs selected Marquette guard Kam Jones as part of a trade that sends Jones’ draft rights to the Indiana Pacers.
The trade that lands Kam Jones in Indianapolis was settled on Wednesday before the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft started. The Pacers acquired the pick by sending a 2030 second round pick and cash to the Spurs. That second round pick isn’t even the Pacers’ pick, it comes from the Sacramento Kings from a trade made back in 2023.
Kam Jones finished up his four years at Marquette with an All-American level season, averaging 19.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.4 steals per game, all of which were career highs. He leaves the Golden Eagles as the program’s #2 all-time scorer with 2,044 points, which makes him just the second 2,000 point scorer in MU history, trailing only Markus Howard, the top scorer in team history.
Now, we do have to point out that as a second round pick, Jones is not guaranteed a contract from the Pacers. However, this is a pick that they traded in to get, as Indiana did not have a pick in the first round, and their second round pick is sitting at #54. If they wanted this spot in the draft, then they want Kam Jones on the roster, or at least that’s what the logic tells us. I would imagine it will be just a matter of days before we find out that he’s getting a multi-year guaranteed contract…… but that’s between Kam, his agent, and Indiana general manager Chad Buchanan.
Indiana is coming off an NBA Finals appearance where they lost to Oklahoma City in seven games. Part of the reason they lost that seventh game is an Achilles tendon injury to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton, so it stands to reason that the Pacers are in need of talented guards who can distribute the ball. Jones showed he can play that position on the floor this past season, not to mention the scoring touch he showed in his first three years with Marquette. It remains to be seen exactly what Indiana’s plan is for Jones, but I feel pretty positive about this arrangement.
I presume that we’ll see Kam Jones in Pacers blue & yellow starting on July 10th when NBA Summer League gets started in Las Vegas. Stay tuned for the exact schedule of when he’ll be in action……
