The 2019 Big East Golfer Of The Year played his way into the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club.
In 2019, Marquette’s Oliver Farrell was named Big East Men’s Golf Player of the Year and helped push the Golden Eagles to a Big East championship.
In 2025, Farrell will play in the 153rd Open Championship, which I presume is a very big deal for the Englishman.
This year’s British Open is being played at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Farrell didn’t have an automatic bid into the field of 156 players by winning a previous Open or standing in the top 50 players in the world, or one of the other methodologies. Farrell got in by way of the name of the tournament: The Open Championship. He shot a two round total of 136 to finish fifth at Burnham & Berrow in Somerset back in early July and thus grab the last Final Qualifying spot available at that event. Farrell’s own Open Championship bio page says that he was ranked #1,480 in the world going into the qualifying event, and yet, he’s going to be one of just 156 men with a chance to hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday.
As is traditional for golf, Farrell is guaranteed to play on Thursday and Friday. At that point, he’ll have to be in the top 70 with ties to make the cut and continue on to Saturday and Sunday.
Farrell will tee off at 4:16pm local time (10:16am Central) in the very last group to start off the first round, and he’ll be playing with Younghan Song and George Bloor. For Round 2, that same group will start off at 11:15am local time (5:15am Central).
