That breaks up a run of six straight conference tournaments with either a 1st or 2nd place finish
Well, it turns out Marquette men’s golf couldn’t make any magic happen on the final day of the 2024 Big East Championship.
After posting a +14 on the second day of the tournament, Marquette rallied back with an even par score as a team on Monday, but that didn’t help them on the leaderboard. MU ended the tournament in the same spot that they were after Day 2, in fourth place. with a three day total of 881. That’s nine strokes behind tournament champion Seton Hall, who also posted an even par score of 288 as a team on Monday. Butler was +13 in second place, and a -3 day as a team from Creighton got them just two strokes past Marquette at the end of things.
Marquette’s best round of the day came from Max Lyons, who shot -2 to finish +6 for the tournament and tied for 13th place. Josh Robinson bounced back from his +4 day on Saturday to shoot an even par to close out his tournament, but that only landed him in a tie for third place at an even par 216 for the three day event. Robinson went into the back nine at even part, put up bogeys on #12 and #13, but then eagled #14 and birdied #15 to make things interesting.
I believe that’s right about when there was a seven way tie for first at -1 overall, but a bogey on 17 didn’t help Robinson, nor did St. John’s Peicheng Chen getting a birdie on #2 as the Red Storm went out the back nine first and came up the front nine to close out their tournament. That birdie on #2 for Chen ended up being the difference for him to win the individual title and qualify for an individual shot at the NCAA Regionals.
Finishing tied for third place was good enough to earn all-tournament honors for Robinson. He’s the only Golden Eagle to earn that trophy in the event with Aiden Lafferty coming in as MU’s second best finisher at +3 and tied for ninth place.
